Civic Si.

I'm THIS close to buying a new Civic Si hatchback as a somewhat impracticle present to myself for getting into med school (and whose purpose it will be to wisk myself to and fro said school each day in low-to-the-ground bliss). I love the way it looks.

BUT. . .I am nagged by the thought that it is no longer (ever was?) the best in its genre. What else should I consider for the same $$$ that exhibits the same sort of pathos of the Si? Need 4 seats, no matter how abreviated two of them might be.

It's usually compared to the Focus ZX3 and the VW GTI, both of which I'd label as total crap not worth anyone's money.

I've read good things about the all-new Mazda 3. Mazdas offer the sporty handling that GTI's and Si's used to have. An Acura RSX coming off a 24-month lease would also be fun while meeting your budget requirements.

I'll only buy Hondas. Get your fix at the Temple of VTEC.

I'll never own another VW again. I've had the Golf and the Passat. Enough to swear me off the brand forever. I'll not mention the ford.

I'll have to look at the Mazda 3 a bit.
