5th anniversary of John Peel's death today

For those who wish to remember. I certainly had a sad moment this morning.
As Pete Wylie once said, "He is a man amongst men".
Feel free to post you own memories...

I know music is all down to taste, but in regards to my own wavelength, Peely was a magnificent man. I'd been around music all my life, liked it, but never really loved it until one night I sat down with an old Rotel tuner and heard John. That was the starting point (for me) of really loving music.
...what do you think of the show so far?

I loved his style but not much of his musical choices. We always enjoyed his Radio times column, tales of the family.
He always appeared to be one of life's "good guys".
He is missed.

Someone you just can not say enough good about. He is greatly missed, it is sad to think people will grow up without the chance to hear his radio shows, on either Radio1 or 4.

From his biog the story about being at a Radio 1 roadshow in the mid 70's and seeing DLT in a speedboat with a womble will always be a favourite of mine, especially as my then best friends father managed the Wombles.
His place on radio will never be filled for me, either for music or general chat.

If you have not read this this yet, it is worth reading even if you are not a Peel fan.
Used listen to his shows and jot down records I liked. When in London I would get most of them in Rough Trade, and go and see the bands live. Happy days. Never been replaced in my view, a class apart.
Regards
Nic

I remember that a week after his death, instead of observing a minute's silence, we were asked to observe a minute's noise for the great man.
Perhaps we should all play his favourite song together at midnight:

My John Peel Story:
He sent me a postcard once, inviting me and the rest of the band around to BBC Radio where he'd buy us all a drink (1980).
We made a date and duly turned up at Broadcasting House reception to wait for the great man. In he came. "Hello John", we said. "Oh, Hi" he said, before ignoring us and getting into the lift.
90% of the music on his show was crap. The Fall! Oh, come on...

It's about personal taste Mike...his shows for me were a chance to hear stuff I'd otherwise miss and potentially hear stuff that I like.
The Fall for instance, you may not like them, but they've kept hold of a good size loyal fanbase for a long time. Myself being one of them.

A Peel classic quote was
"Andrew Lloyd Webber writes songs for people who don't like music."
