Music, The reason we own a quality HiFi.

Posted by: Whizzkid on 22 February 2009

Hi Guys,

I was flicking through some of the "discussions" in the Audio and DA rooms and then came to what I think is the most civilised of all the rooms on this forum. But I'm always a little perplexed by the realative inactivity of this room and as my title suggests is this not what we own a Naim system for? Its really the size of the Naim Dac thread that got me thinking that there is a big discussion on a product thats in a prototype stage and only a few people have heard it but the thread has a 180+ posts already the mind boggles to what can they really be talking about. Now I love the topic of HiFi and get out to many Bake Offs & HiFi Shows around the country to hear and see as much different kit as I can which is fun but ultimately its the music played on these systems that enthuses me the most really and how its presented so a familar piece on an unfamiliar system can give you a different insight into its creation.

I've been around various fora for about 5 years now and have met some nice people as a result of posting on different fora but have found myself gravitating to the music rooms much more lately. I have an Electronic Music thread on HiFiWigWam that is great way of exchanging views on my first love in music and its got a healthy post count and views and I hope it continues to grow but the best thing it hasn't degraded into a slag fest about the relative merits of Aphex Twin up against Squarepushers output. So why do the audio threads deteriate on a regular bases? the music room never seems to get into those situations, people enjoy a bit of ribbing but ultimately we are here for the love of music and that is why I searched out a quality HiFi a few years ago when my old one went bang and in doing this my musical tastes have developed to now include Free Form Jazz and Improvisational music, Classic, Prog Rock, Modern Jazz & a little bit of (OMG) Folk music, who knows what else will be next. To me that is the beauty of owning a quality set the insight and understanding of other types of music it brings to me anyway I'll stop rambling and would like to hear your thoughts on the lack of musical buzz in the music room compared to Audio rooms or should we keep it this way and not let the riff raff know about the great place the music room is it could spoil it for all of us Smile.

Hi Dean,

I really liked your post, you are absolutely right that people don't push their opinions about music down others throats whereas with kit, they do seem to have fairly robust discussions.

It is odd that for some reason people find it easier to accept that others hear the same music differently than they can accept that people hear diffences in the same equipment, maybe as a cd or LP doesnt cost as much as am amp, CD player etc there is not the need for self/cost-justification.

note to self - must spend more time in the music room..............

It's kinda like flipping channels on TV. . . . . Reality TV -vs- Public Broadcast meets Rolling Stone mag in the music room. I get most of the information I need in the music room.

I do enjoy reading the info in the hifi room, but many times the discussions go south. The music forum is the best value for my viewing dollar. Thanks to all who contribute, I have discovered some great music that otherwise, never would have seen the light of day.

jazzfan-

Since you're not finding much that interests you, why don't you take the initiative and start a few threads yourself. I'm sure many here would welcome, and contribute to something that hasn't been covered. Be it jazz, blues, polka, etc.

Best,

Max

Guys thanks for the contributions to this thread Smile

As I said in my OP Naim has fired my interest in music to make me investigate new genres that I would not have considered in my youth and through this room and others I have found out where to start and that has been invaluable (especially to my wallet) I would just love to see more movement in this room like King Size says there are only really three heavily used threads and they really don't let you know what the artists style is so its really useless to anyone looking to try out something new. I do try to put a little bit of a blurb on my entries to the "What are you listening now" thread and as Max Bass says if you think something is lacking in this room start a thread and make it happen take the initiative and show to many who peak occasionally in this room that there is more to owning a Naim/whatever marque set than the constant upgrade grind (SORRY NAIM Smile) and the constant anylising of the miniture.

Remember that at the end of the day you have a HiFi to appreciate and understand the music on a more intimate level this seems to be understood by the many classical buffs like Todd, Mike, George & Tam but where are the stimulating threads on Jazz, Rock, Electronica, Folk (though there is the all time heavyweight Folk discographer in ROTF) etc etc.. they don't have to be as indepth as some of Todd's posts I know but those of you who feel that its difficult to write about music might be surprised how easy it can be by just describing what instruments are used and how it makes you feel as a starter.

I hope that this thread stimulates a little more interest in the Music room and I hope lurkers find the confidence to post about new or old interesting Music that has come their way. I suppose I'm as bad as anyone in not posting threads about my discovery's so I will try to change that over the next few weeks but these thoughts have been in me ever since the DA room opened and the quite nasty Lavry/HDX debacle which ended in bans. I have a Naim set so I can enjoy my Music to the full not to wave it about to show how big and clever I am.

Dear Dean,

I am probably more frightened by my ignorance of the Rock, Prog Rock, Pop .... worlds than most here are of the classical fields!

I would love it if those pointing up the non-classical fields would write some words about the music, and not just post photo-links of the album covers.

I am sure that you would agree, that being a listener rather than necessarily a performer is no handicap to describing music! In fact it may be an advantage, because the description will major on what is heard rather than something theoretical!

I don't criticise anyone for being shy of posting, but I am sure the nice nature of this room should encourage people to take the risk - no one is going to rip into someone, enthusiastically describing their favourite music!

Come on you non-classical enthusiasts, give it a go, and you may even get me buying some of your favourites, just to see what it is you write about!

Long live the Music Room!

Hi George,

I'm not sure, but I think people find it more comfortable to speak from behind the album cover, maybe through discomfort of feeling the need to express opinions in "high brow" terms - myself included, silly I know but maybe true.

I know b***er all about music but I know that I enjoy listening to it, and am happily suprised to discover ,and enjoy, music I never knew existed, a simple "I really liked it" would be helpful, as you suggest.

Although I love small record stores, and Brussels is full of them, I have discovered a major store which has a larger version of iTunes, but for the stores complete music stock, I am therefore going to use some of the comments from here to go and search for music which I would never otherwise have discovered.

So thank you to everyone for the music you are going to help me discover

Dear Barrie,

I express my views in hopefully plain languge, refracted through typo-disasters, which just occasionally make the results very funny in an unintended way!

I think the only thing that makes me sad to see is the occasional "negative" music thread. Really because a person does not like something does not mean it is not enjoyable by many others.

Thinking of such notable musical luminaries as Barry Manilow, or Phil Collins, I would bet they have a huge fan base!

I even enjoy The Scaffold, because I remember such hits as Aintree Iron and Lilly the Pink from my very young days!

Great post Whizzkid. I must visit this site more often, as every time I do I read something of interest and it usually helps me in deciding as to what to listen to next. Example being, I just came across a Sandy Denny thread and here I am revisiting her excellent album The North Star Grassman and the Ravens. In fact I should make a habit of whenever in a quandry as to what to spin, just go to the music room and others will point me in the right direction.
