Transcribe music?

Posted by: MontyW on 07 July 2006

Hi,

I have recently started (after a long, long break) to play the trumpet and I am finding it very difficult to get some jazz scores. With this in mind I looked on the web to see if there is any software for Macs that can help in transcribing music direct from a CD and ultimately produce a score.

The ability to transcribe direct from CD does not seem possible at the moment - we don't yet have the technology? I have found software that slows music down, so you can try and work out the score, still relying on a good ear!

I have tried a demo of the software that slows down music, but I'm finding it difficult to isolate the brass sections from the others. Can anyone suggest some software that can help me isolate individual instruments from a music CD. If I am able to isolate instruments then I can slow it down and have a go at transcribing.

Cheers,

Dave

Dear David,

There is nothing, as far as I have heard, that will automate the process of transcribing music from a recording. The system called Midi, allows for something of the sort, I believe, but this is completely different. One can write music in mMidi, by playing it precisely in time, and correcting any error in notation later.

Your ears and patience will have to suffice with normal recordings or performances.

Can you imagine Mozart transcribing the secret sacred scores he heard as a child, from one listening alone. Now that is a facility which must count as genius. Transcribing music is hard work for most people, at the best. For many it is impossible. I can do one line at a time, and then only in short burst unless I know the music, when I can just notate it without reference. Even then it is a painstaking effort.

Not good news I am afraid, from fredrik

Dear Fredrick,

Thanks for your reply. I have managed to find some software (for a Mac) that slows down wave files and maintains exact pitch in order to help you identify what notes are being played. What I need now is some software that will help to isolate instruments.

Ah well perhaps I just need to keep on going with the old pen and paper.

Cheers,

Dave

I once heard Apple demonstrate a product - I think it was Nuendo - that removed Brian May's guitar from Bohemiam Rhapsody and replaced it with Jimi Hendrix - I would assume it could just isolate an instrument.

Steinberg, the makers of Cubase, were the authors - you may wish to check out its products here. Though I think they carry a professional price tag.
