N-vi DPL2 on analogue inputs?
Posted by: Erwin on 24 April 2007
I am looking for a all-in-one solution and came across the Naim n-vi which looks very tempting. During browsing through the manual, i noticed that the n-vi is not able to apply decoding on it's analogue inputs. Is there another way to do this? How can i connect my TV and apply PL2?

Depends how you "get" your TV.
If anything in your system has a digital out then you can do it that way...
This points to 4 possibilities.
1) Your TV has a digital out (some Pioneer Plasmas, for example, have this)
2) You use a freeview box which has a digital out (like a topfield for example).
3) You use SKY and have either an HD or a Sky+ box
4) You're on cable, and upgrade to a V+ (or TVDrive) box
Any of those four will solve this for you.
My n-Vi takes an optical feed from my V+ cable box for surround on regular TV viewing, and it's very good indeed!
Hope this helps

Or an external ADC

Thanks for the information but none of the 4 mentioned solutions is possible for me, so the only possibility is to use an external ADC.
Is this n-vi limitation a hardware limitation or will there be a SW upgrade to allow processing on the analogue inputs?

I went through this line of enquiry before I got an n-Vi at home.
It's hardware based - there's no internal ADC - thus only digital inputs can run through the DSP for surround processing - also why bass mix is only available on digital sources.
Finding an external ADC could be costly - might be cheaper to buy a freeview box with a digital output.. might even give you better picture and a hadr drive recording system over and above the internal tuner in your TV.. gotta be worth a look

It was done for cost/performance reason's.

why not look for a used AV2 and associated Power amps, then you get everything you need. I had a similar decision to make myself and also really needed more optical inputs than the 1 the n-Vi provides. I wouldn't part with my AV2 now I can tell you that - just wish the DVD5 would hurry up and come down in price on the second-hand market!

That is why i preferred the n-vi: it has a good DVD player included for free.
