Oldie

Spotted you were havingthe 100amp mains fuse upgrade done. Any chance you can tell me how long it took to do the job, how long your leccy was off for etc? Just I'm having mine done tomorrow and the lady at nPower couldn't answer any of that!

Oh and most importantly what difference it made.

Cheers

I know what's coming.
Oldie will be asking "how do I reset the clock on the video recorder?".
Big Grin
Oh....and that's another 3 months to get the system warmed up again.

I'm curious here with regard this upgrade, can you tell me how to go about getting the upgrade?
Who do I contact, an electrician or my electricity supplier? How much does it cost, and how long the job takes?

Clive

Rich,
just ignore that young upstart Rasher, I know how to program the video, fortunatly the local School had just finished for the day, so I just grabbed a seven year old as they went past, and they did it for me in seconds. Winker

THE Local Electicity Boards Contractor McNicols did the job and in all honesty and at the risk of feeding more ammo to Rasher it took them less time to complete the job that It took me to work out which was the power suppy and which was the amps so to switch them of in the correct order.I suppose 15/20 miniutes at the very most, mind you they did say that mine was a very easy one to do, I would suggest that you make sure that they have a clear area to work in as it makes the job so much easer. It certainly took me longer to clear out the under stairs cupboard where the main fuse is than it took them to do the job.
It's a upgrade that is definatly the equivalent to three new black boxes Big Grin
a well chuffed, in this case,

I will post regarding the improvements If my old ears can sort out the wheat from the chaff

Will report back tomorrow.....

Clive , just phone up your local Electricity Board [not Supplier as they can be a totaly differant Company]ask for the customer support
dept and just ask for it , it's completly Free ,but you must have a reason for reqireing it done.Time taken to do the job ,see above post ,but quickly , about 15/20 minuets depending on your particular circustances, just make sure when they come you have cleared the working area completly for them.Post how you get on if you decide to get it done.
Best of luck

Rich,
It shouldn't make any differance to your house alarm, at least it doesn't with mine most if not all alarms have a back up re chargable battery in the control panel/box that should last for at least2/3 hours in case of power failure
oldie
couldn't set the timer indeed!!
Posted on: 07 March 2005 by Rich Cundill
Oldie

Yes I know the alarm should work like that in theory but we had a power cut early hours of Saturday for about half an hour and the alarm went off constantly and the panel was dead. Could it be the battery is knackered?

I mght have to perform a test in minute!!

On a more serious note.

Is there any disadvantage in having a higher rated fuse fitted ?

Oldie/Rich
Thank you guys I'll check it out. By the way my house is new, well only 3 years old. Do you think I would have a 100 amp fuse as standard?

My local electricity board is SWEB and my supplier is Scottish Power, so would the latter be a better bet to contact?

Guys ignore the last post, I've just checked my meter and it says I have a 100 amp fuse.
Can you go higher???

Mick, I can't see any disavantage at all ,as long as your house circuits are protected by the correctly rated, Heyyyyyyyy, just a miniute,Parry Iv'e seen through your game, you are trying to get me to mention the F WordSo I'll get banned Winker you shouldn't have any problems , it just allows more amps through when needed Transient peaks and all that stuff or just being able to see when someone takes a shower. If you are unduly worried (1) THE Local Electricity Board would not fit 100 AMP Fu [ OP'sss nearly done it again]if there was any danger to Person or Property.
(2)I would have thought that the only danger was haveing a overloaded 60 amp that might overheat before blowing with the however remote the possibilty of causing a fire.
(3) I'm sure someone in our midst will post chapter and verse why you should/shouldn't
The only disavantage I can find ,was having to wait in untill the Sparkys arrived[ on time]

Well that was quick - took him 10 mins to do the job. Only problem is that nPower don't do 100 amp fuses anymore. 80 amps max. So my 60 amp was replaced by an 80 amp. Got myself in a potential hole when he started asking me questions about why I wanted it doing (God I am a crap liar!) - I said it was on the recommendation of a plumber who is fitting me a power shower. Asked me stuff about what type of shower etc - I acted dumb!

Anyway just ahd a quick listen - any improvement is of the order of when you duraglit the mains plugs (which I guess makes sense) so more of everything but not a lot more. Not bad for free though.

Cheers

Hi Rich,
Bl--dy hell ,that was quick, as I said it takes more time to clear out the area than for the Sparkys to do the job, I haven't had a listening session yet ,I thought I would let things settle down first,no I'm lieing I spent most of the time on this Bl--dy computer answering posts on another thread. But today I hope to spend a bit of quality time in my listening room, the only problem I have though,is I have done the unforgivable and had two tweeks done without a proper and subjective session between , I have now ,after hearing Rashers set up copied him and stood my SBL'S ON 22MM Slate slabs mounted on 3xheads and 5mm balls instead of just the 4x heads. So I will not be able to make a completly subjective assesment. I'm going to have to wait until Rasher and another Friend,Tony comes round for another evening of ,well you know what, to hopfully get a really subjective view on things
But I'M pleased that things have worked out well for you.
PS I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT A Naim'ee would have had no problem with lieing, stretching the truth etc Winker, phrases immediatly come to mind such as :- "Yes of course it's worth it" , "Well the up grade will only be a few quid more" , "I'll be down /out in a minute to help I just want to hear the end of this track", "Of course I can hear the differance ,can't you". Big Grin
Ohhhhhhhhhh the list is endless
Come on Mick, it's your turn next! and of course the fact that it's FREE should help you make your mind up Big Grin

Sorry I did not come back to you last night but I was attending a dinner party.

I would be interested in how you find this tweaK and would appreciate your honesty in saying if it was all worth the fuss etc.

I shall have it done if you think it has made a genuine difference.

Mick,
We may not agree on many things/anything
But my honasty is not in question Big Grin I will let you know what I think as soon as I have had a listen, but remember what I have said regarding haveing two tweeks done at once

N.B. Maybe a collection for dolphins and the new Brighton Library ?

Graham,
Athough I havn't yet been to the new libary yet,I'm sure that if the rest of Brighton is anything to go by, there will be dolphins all over the plaice Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh sorry. Roll Eyes The only trouble is though, they don't seem to move much,I supose it's because they are made of cast iron.May be it's taking the other thread to it's logical conclusion ,if all the greedy sod's that have promoted the grab every thing you can policy carry on the way they have over the past few years , Cast Iron Dolphinsis all we'll have left. OK Mick,
You asked for a "honest"report so hear we go, as you know, that is if you remember, I have in the past stated that I'm not a tweeker and the last time my kit was, touched/moved /switched off was when I went active some years ago so please bare this in mind I also stated in the begining of this thread that I had just copied Rasher and stood my SBL's on Slate slabs with the usual arrangment of x heads and ball's instead of the SBL spikes into 4xheads.
for those who may not know ,as I think it has a bearing on the out come, the system roughly is LP12, ITTOK, AT09, CDS, 52, XOVER, 250's x2, SBL'S,and of course the usual power suppies.
Music listened to:-
Nitn Sawhney: Beyond Skin
Pat Metheny: One Quite Night
Henryk Gorecki: Symphony No 3
Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique
Jan Garbaek: I took up The Runes
Keith Jarrett: The Koln Concert
Trilok Gurtu: The Beat of Love
Cold Play: A Rush of Blood to The Head
Roger Waters: Radio K.a.o.s.
Leo Kottke: 6&12 String Guitar
Davy Spillane: A Place Among The Stones
Transglobal Underground: Internation Times
Afro Celtic Sound System: Seed
Neil Young &
Crazy Horse: Weld
Antonio Forcione: Acoustic Revenge
Ravi Shankar: Raga's
and finaly just for fun,
The Sound Track from: Deliverance

A fairly broad selection I would hope you would agree, anyway I agree with Rich about more of every thing , but here we part company, imho it's not just more, better is a word I would use
more /better timbra, bass, presentation,[ With Gorecki's no 3 I find it already a very emotional piece but now when Dawn Upshaw sings it just tears out your heart.] more control just all round better. The bass from my SBL'S has certainly increased it's range it's now not only heard but also felt, and if you don't believe me just ask my neighbours. If you have Bareks shore up the Bl--dy walls before turning the wick up.I do think though, that to put it simply the more boxes you have, the better the improvment, sorry to put it this way,I suppose logicaly more boxes draw more power/amps,the bigger the "Mains Supply" fuse the less of a strangle on the power supply on peaks[ somebody out there must know all of the technical details].
So would I recommend it? well, considering the upheaval, moveing everything out of the way, waiting in for the sparky, costs involled,Ohhhhhhh I forgot it's FREEAt least it is until the Electicity Board figurs out what is going on.
YES I WOULD!!

Oldie / anyone

I will give this a go.

Before I waste anyones time, it is best I find out what size incoming fuse I have got.

How do I do that ?
