Fred Trueman RIP

Posted by: Bruce Woodhouse on 01 July 2006

Amidst the acres of sporting coverage yesterday you may have missed this sad news. I'd like to mark my respect for Fred Trueman who died yesterday.

I've no desire to turn this thread into a rose-tinted piece of nostalgia but amidst the cheating, hype and melodrama of so much sport currently in the headlines here was a genuine achiever, a man who delivered on his ability by hard work.

I did not have the pleasure of seeing him play in the flesh but I've known him as a friend, neighbour and professionaly for the last 10 years or so and he will be much missed in his county and his community particularly.

An amazing fast bowler for England, and a grumpy old git for Test Match Special.

RIP indeed.

...and bitingly funny with it.

Apparently used to hurl verbal rage aswell as the ball at the poor receiving batsman.

RIP thirded

Jonners, Blowers and Fred, on Radio Three. It will never happen again.

"Line and length: that's the way to get them out...."

So true...

Not only a great cricketer but also the man who did Indoor League

The Truman show featured darts (broadcast for the first time on television), bar billiards, shove ha'penny, skittles and arm-wrestling.

Fred always ended with the line 'I'll see thee'.

Great guy - he'll be missed.

A word often over used in today's world - GREAT - however it can certainly be applied to Fred is no small measure - Was it Yorshire and England or England and Yorkshire, a man proud of his past but lived for the future of the game he so loved. Aggers on TMS gave such a warm tribute yesterday following another mawling of the England team.

I had the chance to go to a couple of sports man's dinners to hear Fred be the guest of honour - time and money well spent RIP Fred

Dear oh dear, that's terrible news. Fred and Dickie Bird were my two favourite Poms. Hope Dickie's still ok.
