Not so different to wax cut 78s then! Though the 78 was went through one more stage in the conversion to metal stampers. Being of a soft material, it had a negative taken from which a metal master was made (positive as the oroginal cut), which was then used to make new (negative) stampers. The original 9Positive) metal parts have proven to have a useful life of eighty years so far, while shellac itself is less durable in the main.
