How do I play FLAC files on my system after download?
Posted by: GoBlue on 19 June 2010
Hi everyone. I am new to the Naim forum but have had Naim stereo equipment for over 18 years. I just upgraded my system to the Naim HDX, DAC + XPS, NAC 252 Pre-amp + Supercap, NAP 250.2 Power Amp and Sonus Faber Cremona Auditor M speakers. The system sounds unbelievable with CDs, better with LPs and even better on Hi Res recordings. I would like to purchase some Hi Resolution recordings on the internet but am unsure of the best, most efficient path of getting the music to my system once the download is completed and saved on the desktop of my MacBook. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Firstly I recommend that your store them logically, dont just throw them all in a folder, store them by artist the album. This has no effect on anything other than your sanity if you find you want to pick and change.
As for playback. if you are using flac and 'pushing' from your mac, i.e. picking music on the mac, then songbird is your baby, you'll find it on macupdate.com

I got the impression the OP is asking about how to get the downloaded music on his HDX to play it back from there? Is that possible?
Maybe I'm mistaken?

Opps, sorry did not read the HDX bit.
Well of course its possible, he just needs to put the files into a suitable hdxstore? (I think thats what its called, I don't own one)
Assuming HDX plays FLAC.

Yes. What I am asking is how do I move the FLAC files to my HDX? I do have a Naim DAC with a USB port. I assume I could copy the FLAC files to a thumb drive or Ext Hard drive and plug in through the USB port. I would ,however, like to copy the FLAC files directly to my HDX so I can play them on my home network. Thanks agin for any input you have.

Either set your mac up to share or get a NAS, and you will be set. I don't think you can copy over to the HDX, but I could be wrong.

The HDX files will be seen from your Mac as a network source. At this point you can move files back and forth between your HDX and Mac, but not hi-res files.

Only music that has been ripped by the HDX can be stored on the HDX, all other music must be either attached as a local USB source or on a shared network location.
The DAC will not play FLAC files, it's USB drive is for WAV files or for an apple iPod.
If you check the naim website under the HDX product you will find links to a range of user guides available for download to help you.

PureHifi,
My understanding is that with the new software version, that files ripped by the HDX to its internal storage or files ripped by the HDX to an external storage device (NAS) can be movedback and forth from/to the HDX HDD.
I have not done this as I haven't filled the current 400 GB HDD, but this is my understanding from what was posted by Naim on thiis forum.
It was never clarified or asked specifically, about moving 16 bit downloaded wav files to/from the HDX HDD.

You are correct, maybe I should of expanded on "Only music that has been ripped by the HDX can be stored on the HDX" to explain that you can move music back to the HDX that it has ripped, but as I understand it...not move music to it that it has not ripped.
