Chopin's nocturnes.

Posted by: Gianluigi Mazzorana on 06 March 2006

Hi all!
Another thread another search.
I own the whole nocturnes played by Arthur Rubinstein.
Maybe somebody could suggest me some other editions or players.
I do love very much Rubinstein's performance and i love very much this part of Chopin's production.
I would like to listen to some other performer.
As the choice is enormous i do trust in your experienced ears and hearts!

Thanks a lot!

Well, many years ago I joined Britannia, largely because they gave me Ashkenazy's complete (13 disc) Chopin cycle for just a fiver and I've been pretty happy with them. However, I was recently in a CD shop where they were playing the nocturnes and it sounded extremely good - played by Angela Hewitt and I have been meaning to buy the set ever since.....

Personally though, the nocturnes are my favourite of all Chopin's piano work, there's something wonderfully entrancing about them - so it's comparatively odd that I only have the one recording.

There are many, many wonderful versions of the Chopin Nocturnes. I like the set by Ivan Moravec, another classic interpretation.

Hi Tam!
Yes!
There's something aching and acute in piano works and the way that Rubistein plays them makes it further penetrating.
I'll try to take alook around and see if i can find Angela Hewitt performance.

Thanks a lot!

Gianluigi,

I think Daniel Barenboim has the magic.

I'll second the Moravec set - it is really superb - though Ashkenazy is very good here, as are Rubinstein and Francois, though the latter offers an alternative take on the works.

Thanks a lot again.
Tomorrow morning i'll take a trip to town and see.
Meanwhile i'm listening again to Schiff's Beethoven Sonatas.
I think it's a very good performance.

Anyone familier with Witold Malcuzynski?

I have only heard one version of Chopins Nocturnes and that is the Daniel Barenboim recording that has the album cover displayed by Haim in his post above.

I find this recording to be involving and captivating and produces those moments of inner stillness that typically tell me that something special is going on with a performance.

I heard it playing by chance when I walked into my local classical CD shop and stayed in there until it had finished playing. New it had to be bought. I cannot imagine anyone being disappointed with this performance.

As I say its the only one I have heard. So I offer a very happy but limited perspective.

Norman
