Music you just can't stand

Ricard Strauss, because it's the same tune every time.

Bruckner, because it never ends, it gets so loud
and it repeats phrases without end.

Not very much music really annoys me, though I get pretty ratty about modern pop, which is sung out of tune, like the Kings Of Leon. Muse is another group that take themselves far too seriously for their own good ...

I do struggle with Take That, and Robbie Williams has a way of making me cringe that is out of proportion to his lack of musical inspiration. I do not know why but his caterwauling has me desperate to change radio stations at work!

Anything by ELP.

Zydeco - I love all styles of blues but the French accordion just ruins it for me.

The theme music to "The Archers". Makes me want to smash the radio up!

+1

I also can't stand crooners such as Como, Martin, Sinatra and Des O'Connor (well OK - Des is better than the others and I can stand his songs when they are as good as Dick-A-Dum-Dum ).

George,

Please don't take offence. You're such a part of the forum it never occurred there might be an "at work".

Oasis, Smiths(lead singer anyway), rap, hip hop etc, and most of the crooner/lounge lizard/Vegas stuff, just leaves me cold.

Lots of bits of other genres, I don't get too, not listing as I have to get to bed.

Dear Mike,

I don't take offence. I just don't understand the point. I have always been a worker - a bloody haed worker - and have known the fact of being both in unstable work and out of it altogether.

So please excuse my numskull brain for not understanding your point. Just watched Schindler's List and beside myself ...

Punk - grotesque, offensive, moronic noise made by immature sociopaths. Its not even music. The Sex Pistols should have been drowned at birth or taken out and thrashed in public.

(C)Rap, HipHop, - just dreadful.

Michael Bolton - so much wailing
Paul Potts - so little talent

Roxy music - Who is that talentless prat of a lead singer?
Boy bands - so pointless
Girl bands - ditto
Barry manilow - excruciating

Haven’t heard it for a while, but Hooked On Classics never failed to wind me up angry very quickly, just had a quick listen on utube, and yep!, it still does, just turned it off in time (almost smashed my computer up in rage)
…can’t help but find it so insulting to those genius composers whom I admire so much (and not to mention my own limited I know musical intelligence) but to feel the need to put in a monotonous moronic drum just to point out where the beat is because we’re all too think to know there is a beat in classical music and they are going to show us exactly where it is each and every time while you bash your head against a wall in time,…the bastards!

Alanis Morisette makes my teeth grate. Mariah Carey's vocal pyrotechnics (in lieu of actually singing the song) make me cringe.

Right with you on that Bruce. Added to that she is a very stupid and sometimes quite offensive person.

As a fan of US sports I have a particular hate of R&B singers mangling the 'The Star Spangled Banner', in the same way as bloody Mariah's yowling. Unlike Britain, the USA has a fantastic national anthem and it is such a pity to hear it wrecked. 'The Simpsons' got it spot on when they did the baseball game episode.

In contrast I once saw on TV James Earl Jones narrate 'The Star Spangled Banner' while a choir gently sang it behind him at a Baseball all star game, fantastic. The same game also had Geddy Lee (from Rush) sing the Canadian national anthem acapella, not great musically, but lovely to know how much it must have meant to him, as he is such a fan of baseball.

I hate to castigate a whole genre of music, but almost all opera makes me dive for the mute button, although there are a few exceptions. I am sure some music I love would make opera fans do the same.

Without exception anything by Dexys Midnight Runners, Kevin Rowland's singing always sounds like a tom cat being castrated without any anaesthetic.

I'm not keen on Burzum, Mayhem or Entoombed or the stuff that is played on Radio 1 Xtra.

I just don't get Jazz - I listened to the Empirical album on the naim label site and thought they must be just taking the piss. Quite awful.
