Music you just can't stand

Ricard Strauss, because it's the same tune every time.

Bruckner, because it never ends, it gets so loud
and it repeats phrases without end.

I must agree, it's pretty awful.

Can't say there's anything musical I actively hate, but I've never got rap.

The "extraordinary" Katie Melua. Truly awful.

James

Don't let that put you off. Late at night try Miles Davis 'Kind of Blue' to chill out, or early evening Charles Mingus 'Mingus Ah Um', for something with balls.

Don't listen to them James. Life's too short to start worrying about what you don't like. There is masses of music in many genres out there to occupy many lifetimes IMO.

If your gonna go for some jazz leave out the squeaky stuff ie any thing that gets blown, stick to piano at least it can only be discordant, not a dreadful row(unless the player is grunting of course). Winker Smile

Fred ain't bad that said. Smile

Anything by Chris The Berk, especially that awful dirge "Lady In Red".

Spot on Mike! Elektra and the first horn concerto sound EXACTLY the same. Just listen!!

Sister xx

Utter b*ll*x, of course. You can't have heard either Erich or Carlos Kleiber conduct 'Der Rosenkavalier', Denis Brain perform the two Horn Concertos under HvK's young Philharmonia, or Lisa Della Casa sing the Four Last Songs under Boehm, plus some of the wonderful tone poems such as the Dons Juan and Quixote, and much else besides.

But, of course, prejudice plays a large part in our individual decisions on what music not to listen to (viz my total disregard of the dreadful Queen, my refusal to listen to hip-hop, or my disgust at the supposed musical talent said to be on display on X-Factor)!

Of course all Strauss is the same, isn't it Graham? Mike says so. I was listening to the first horn concerto and Elektra, Big Grinand blow me they sound exactly the same don't they.
Posted on: 07 December 2010 by graham55
Sis, at the risk of repeating myself, b*ll*x to that: no composer ever produced more greatly dissimilar works than R Strauss in Elektra and his (first) Horn Concerto.

And the fact that Mr Eschman disagrees with my opinion leads me to suppose that my opinion must be right!

I suspect extraction of urine in your posts in this regard, Sis (and, if so, sincere apologies for missing this the first time around)!

The urine was indeed being extracted, Graham. The sister has forgiven you. You will be saved. Big Grin

One thousand apologies, Sister, that I didn't spot this first time around!

Oh that I can be such an ar*e......

I genuinely don't like the Elgar oratorios, though. I know they have their admirers.

I'm struggling with Gerontius at the moment, in Barbirolli's account with Janet Baker et al. As I admire JB so much, and this was his last ever recording, I have to feel that it must be worth the effort on my part.....

??
Posted on: 07 December 2010 by Sister E.
Yes, Gerontius is the only one I can listen to all the way through, and it can be genuinely moving, especially the JB recording, but the rest - The Kingdom, the Apostles etc...interminable stuff...sorry

So you don't have a clue why I think all of R. Strauss' music sounds the same. Fair enough.

It's interesting that Bruckner has no defenders.

Mike,
There would be a great many defenders of bruckner on here - it's just that nobody can be bothered any more to listen to your ignorant pseudo intellectual claptrap... as well as your patronising attitude to anyone who you think doesn't know as much about music as you think you do,

Mike, in defense of Mr. Bruckner: not all of the nine are equal but 5, 8 and 9 are contenders for a place in the top 10 of greatest symphonies ever, IMO.

It's all just music and musical curiosity to me Sister.

I feel no need to engage in personal attacks.
