Music you just can't stand

Ricard Strauss, because it's the same tune every time.

Bruckner, because it never ends, it gets so loud
and it repeats phrases without end.

You. Have. Got. To. Be. Kidding. Me.

(Just joking, each to his own; but I rate Radiohead as one of the greatest bands of our time.)

I find the comparison of Yes who are OK with the mighty ELP a little strange, but not uncommon. I have quite a few Yes albums, but between 50-60 containing the great Sir Keith Emerson both with and without his comrades - and some really Nice stuff in amongst that. Keith's music is influenced by various classical composers and he often quotes from these in his playing and I guess if you don't like these composers then you won't like Keith. Even if you do like them you may not appreciate Keith's interpretation. However, I find the way he does it compelling and Emerson plays Emerson is a truly wonderful work that shows the diversity of his playing.

I won't convince anybody about the greatness of a band anymore than anybody could convince me that I should listen to PC or Dire Straits; I notice some folk even claiming to enjoy Radiohead (the only group hired to turn off Blackpool lights) and I know there are people on the forum who say that listen to and even go as far as saying enjoy records by New Order, a feat I find unfathomable.

So let's all rock on listening to what we enjoy and accepting the diverse world that is music.

Nope. Seems I'm not alone either. Winker

But, as you quite rightly say, each to their own.

That there may be, but ROTF is invariably right about ELP. Cool

I used to dislike Anton Brucker too, until I listened to the fifth symphony in concert. This is a music you must listen to very carefully, not doing anything else, not thinking about something else. This is true of most classical music, and can even serve as a definition of classical music, but this is particularly true of Brucker music.

IMHO Richard Strauss orchestral work is harder to defend, but the lieder are fantastic and he wrote excellent operas too. There are many excellent versions of Strauss operas on DVD, with exciting staging.

I would however not try to defend Elgar, Delius, Vaughan Williams or Karl Nielsen.

He made atrociously sounding records. The better your audio equipment, the worst MJ records sound.

Queen, ELP, Coldplay. All are dreadful. Against these three musical travesties everything else is better.

My favourite music ever is The Smiths, which I fully accept that ELP fans will struggle with. It's all part of life's rich tapestry.

Surprised you don't like Coldplay, Nigel, as I find them as dull as the Smiths: in fact I used to think they were the same band - though perhaps I should have guessed not, as they aren't quite so miserable. I bet you like Joy Division and Radiohead ....

If music be the food of love then I'm the indigestion - HMHB (my favourite group).

+1

Of course, as an ELP/ELO/Fairport/Purple/Softs/Chas-&-Dave fan who also likes the Clash, Stranglers, Maiden and Cathedral: I'm probably not the target market for the Smiths, Coldplay, Joy Division, Radiohead and groups like them. I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy because I'm easy come, easy go, little high, little low, any way the wind blows, doesn't really matter to me - as I believe Morrissey once sung.

I think you'll find that is Mr. Mercury.

When I was working at the audio store in Dallas where I was introduced to Naim gear, a customer came in and spent about an hour plus with the owner doing demos, having brought his own CDs. The guy's demo was absolutely making me want to go kick over the high priced system that was playing it, so badly did it grate on my nerves. He finally left, and I asked Todd (the owner) "WTF was that crap he was listening to...I want to know so I don't ever accidentally buy any of it!"

And that is how I found out that John Tesh is just sh*t...

PS - Also have to mention (c)rap & hip-hop; primarily gangstahs with bad attitude and microphone, and all done on a computer it seems to me.
