Simply one of the best blues/rock singers bar none. Amazing how good his voice still is too. Dunno about this Queen malarky though.

Saw him with Bad Co twice in the late 70's. Excellent.

Was there too. Saw them also at Earls Court in 77 and the Rainbow in 74. Great band but not as pure as Free who sadly I was just too young to get to see. Liked Queen especially their first 4/5 LPs (after that disposable)but am not sure about the collaboration. How about a Free/Bad Co reunion - the line up could be Rodgers, Kirke, Ralphs, Tetsu and Rabbit?

Trouble is the main man is not there - I think Paul Kossoff was one of our finest blues guitarists and his contribution was what really made Free so enjoyable for me. With a couple of exceptions, I don't think their material was so great, but the performance and presentation more than made up for it. Paul Rogers is an excellent singer.

Agreed. I was in mourning for weeks when Koss died (I was 17 and this stuff was so close to my heart - I still haven't grown up!)- how he generated so much power yet feel at the same time???????!!!!!!!! Similarly Paul Rodgers is THE vocalist and Simon Kirke and Andy Fraser two of the leading practitioners of their art. Problem was there was so much raw talent in the band as a collective they were far less than the sum of their parts and that they imploded was sadly inevitable.
But some of their material on Free and Fire and Water in my opinion is just timeless. A word about Heartbreaker. Listen to that album dispassionately (if that's possible) and remember as a group they were on their knees by that stage - Andy Fraser left disillusioned, Koss to ill to make many of the sessions - yet still they came out with something that powerful. Heady stuff.

Don't under-estimate the Fraser/Rodgers collaboration. Fraser's songs (after Free) still end up with all sorts of artists too. Great talent - pretty special considering he was a kid when he was in Free.
I disagree about the strength of the material. 'Tons of Sobs' contained a couple of covers but was very strong for a debut. 'Free', 'Fire & Water', & 'Heartbreaker' are superb. 'Highway' & 'Free at Last' contain great tracks even if, overall, they are not quite as strong.
All this and one of the best live albums by anyone in this genre. Not bad for the limited time they were together.
Paul Rodgers is still (rightly) referred to, by his peers and contemporaries, as one of the very best rock/blues singers around.
Steve (just a bit of a fan, maybe).

Steve - I forgot the live album which is of course = superb. Have you got the Songs of Yesterday box set? The live disc on thre is even better than the original set.

Hi Fender,
No, I haven't got the box set. I have everything in the best versions I could find (sound-wise). Although the original CDs suffered from rot, some like them and I can hear why. As is often the case, the different masterings have virtues and faults. I prefer the Island remasters on balance. The early ones lack bass and definition compared, but the trade off is a slightly more forward mid which on my system is not an issue.
