Sony BDP-S1 blu-ray player compatible with AV2?

Another newbie question:

Was considering DVD5 / AV2 / NAPV 175 to add to existing CD5 / FC2 / NAC112 / NAP 150 set-up but am starting to wonder if it may be unwise to invest so heavily in the "old" DVD technology when Blu-ray and HD-DVD is arriving.

An alternative set-up may be to substitute Sony's new BDP-S1 Blu-ray player for the DVD5. (Presumably at some point in the future, the blu-ray / HD-DVD battle will be won and Naim will likely produce a player that supports the winning format).

Will there will be a problem for the AV2 to decode the 5.1 coax digital audio "linear PCM" signal from this blu-ray player? Apparently this is an uncompressed audio signal versus the usual compressed digital soundtrack signal on regular DVDs.

If that will work, what about the 7.1 digital signal from this player?

Any ideas?

With an AV2, one would use the VIPS inputs in the analogue domain, or optical/coax for Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1 material–just like a DVD5.

The BDP-S1 will not output Dolby TrueHD (Meridian Lossless Packing with a different name) over the optical or coaxial outputs, only over HDMI....

I second Dave's recommendation and use the analog outputs from the player. Happily the AV2 has analog 7.1 input - a nice bit of foresight!

hmmm.... except I see that the player is only equipped with a 5.1 analog output...????!!

Most cinematic sound mixers work in 5.1 anyways–the EX rear channels are a dirty little secret (synthesized on many releases!).

Very interesting! I never knew that we have Meridian to thank for the new standard!

So all new receivers/processors will have to be HDMI equipped so they can take the video and the audio.

Shame the n-Vi doesn't have those same 7.1 (well 5.1 in the n-Vi's case) direct inputs into the power stage....
