MA Studio 20's
Posted by: ted on 05 October 2002
Anybody have experience with Monitor Audio Studio 20's. I have had them since 1994, filled with lead and sand, and have slowly upgraded to Nac 102 with PSE, Hi cap, Cd3, and Nap 250 old style and recapped. Every upgrade I do with the Naim's makes the Studio 20's sound even better. Any ideas on speakers or should I keep mine. Thanks Ted

I don't have Studio 20s, but do have MA R352s which work very well on the end of my LP12/CD3.5/Nait3. I got them for £100 a few years back from a friend with an Rega/Audiolab system and he reckons they work much better driven by the Nait. They don't seem to like NACA5 speaker cable though. I'd be interested to know what cables you find work well with the Studio 20s.

I have heard the MA Studio 20's on many occasioms and have yet to be impressed with them.
I find them slow and muddy and they tend to compramise the character of Naim amplifiers.
I personally like the Ruark speakers and am using the Equinox's on the end of my CDX/XPS 82/Hi-Cap/180 and for me it works very well.
Go and audition a whole range of speakers and find one that suits your musical taste's. I am sure you can make a big improvement of the MA's.

I still have naim speaker cable bi wired to my studio 20's.( 2 11 foot lengths for each speaker. I know it's a no-no from naim but I tried it both ways and bi wire sounds better. Ted

You should look at singlewiring, but using NACA5 as the jumper cable, not the usual brass plate. Iused to Biwire and I've also bi-amped, and I find that my Nait is very convincing in singlewire using the same kind of speaker cable to be the jumper between the bass/mid and the treble.
