50th Birthday Present (to myself)

Posted by: winkyincanada on 03 September 2009

In the no to distant future (year after next) I turn the big 5-0. I want to treat myself but whatever it is has to be 1961 vintage. Options considered so far:

1961 solid body electric guitar
1961 American muscle car
1961 watch

Any suggestions or advice?

1961 was a monumentally good vintage for red wines in Bordeaux (have you seen "Sideways"?)

A well chosen bottle will still be drinking beautifully, although it will cost you.

My friend Chris managed to get to taste quite a few and wrote them up here

Cheers

'61 Pontiac Catalina convertible? One of the more stylish early '60s cars. Probably handles like a lump of jelly, but makes a great posemobile.
Also has the advantage of being obviously of its age , not so sure you would be able date a Fender/Gibson etc to a specific era that easily.

Good luck, buying for yourself is the only way to get exactly what you want.

Enjoy.

I'm with Rod, and would go for some 1961 vintage bordeaux. For a top 1st growth, it'll cost you, but, so long as the provenance is good and it's been well cellared, it will be something very special. Get a bottle, or two, or three... and then treat yourself to one of these...

The first ones arrived in 1961 and it's still the most beautiful looking car (especially as a coupe) ever made in my opinion.

The watch didn't excite me much. A muscle car would be cool. A guitar (startocaster? Les Paul?) would ooze of class.

Regards...

A gorgeous car, for sure, Avole. But surely you mean the Type 57 Atlantique?? It's in the top 5 for me.

For all that, you'd need pretty deep pockets for either these days, and I think they were regarded as old bangers by 1961...

Anyway, back on topic - I believe the dream car thread is still running...?

Winky, I can highly recommend 1961 Chateau Haut Brion...

The Gibson SG was born in 1961, much easier to play than the heavier Les Paul, and perfect for growing old disgracefully:

Alternatively, a 1961 250GT Spyder California could be yours:

I'd probably go for a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, introduced in 1961, and famously worn by this guy:

That Ferrari used to belong to James Coburn, by the way, and recently sold for a little over $10m. Not sure if that's more than you want to spend?

Happy 50th!

not old enough - I think the 38 was launched in 1988...?
Something built in oak or pitch pine would be more like it

Thanks guys. All great suggestions. The Ferrari might be slightly out of the price range, though.

The Gibson SG is defintely on the radar. More affordable than the Les Pauls.

I'd say book passage on a cargo steamer that's going around the world and get off at some ports and take a land trip to the next port to get on again.

or take it as far as it goes and take a train trip back to starting point. Something you'll never forget.

Decades ago a friend had been in the military and late 60s was out but he took military transports around the world. one leg was in north Africa and one hotel he was at he stayed a few long hairs were sitting on the patio having drinks and passing joints. He imbibed even tho he was very cleancut, the guys all loved it and had great conversations and kept the liquor flowing. He stayed several more days and they wouldn't let him pay for any food or such. It was a group of assorted rockers with Stones, Leon Russell all enjoying life. He wasn't familiar with their music but said they were a blast.
