Rack mods - help!

I am modifying my rack (not Naim) and need to find some ball bearings. Anyone know where I can buy some? I have drawn a blank.

Any bicycle shop or bearing factors. Every town has one.

While you're at it, make "carefully chamfered apertures" in the boards (if your rack uses boards). Seems to work with every design.

You should get up 1/4" bb at a cycle shop. If you want larger, try a gearbox rebuilder. I found found some larger ones in my collection of Lambretta ballraces. (bottom steering race).

Halfords do bags of twenty smallish and largish ones for about 2 quid a bag.
sorry not sure of the sizes, one for the rear main wheel bearing and the other is front and some pedals.

The rack is steel, the shelves are glass.
Got the balls today, and fitted them in place of the original rubber domes this evening.
Half an hour later they have come out again. What a mess!!! The sound was completely muddled. Really awful.
Sigh...............

Tom - I haven't said what rack it is because I am embarassed to do so.
Its an Apollo Aria, which sounds much better than my old Sound Org tables.
Yeah I know....never heard of it.
Oh well....out with the hacksaw..too late to stop now..

Rasher,
I have played around with glass & ball/nutters under my CDS2 head unit (on Starbase racks).
I found that four BBs made the sound a real mess, but three BBs (two at front, one at back), was really excellent.
BTW, I was given a bag of 7/16" BBs by a friend who got them from a gunsmith (they are used as catapult ammo). I recently needed some more, and the local suppliers only had 3/8" available (pretty cheap at £3.80 for 140 BBs).
cheers, Martin

Hi Rasher,
I had an Aria a while ago and got a mate to do some oak cone feet (like the ones sold for a small fortune elsewhere) and they did the trick quite well. I put them between the Naim gear and the shelves.
I left the spikes seperating the shelves out and experimented with blu-tak of all things! Tried the ball bearing idea but for some reason they didnt do too well.
I used the 2 nuts with the ball bearing in between etc but to my ears it didnt sound too great. I have gone mana now tho... differant story.

I’ve (re)designed a Fraim-imitation and during the process I had to try lots of bearings. By far the best sounding was (at least in my Fraim) the following type, bought in Vienna:
Nirostahlkugel WS 4034, stainless steel, 1/2” diameter. Cost was peanuts: 17 eur for 20 pcs (including 5 Eur because of the limited quantity).
Addresse: Kugel Pompel,A-1160 Wien, Eisnerg. 12,
tel: 485-8058,
email: office@kugelpompel.at
I hope this helps.
