Well I'm not Gary but maybe I can help...

For high quality without using excessive amount of disc space - best to use Apple Lossless format.

Depending on your use, you may find that high quality (320k) AAC is sufficient - but if connecting the iPhone to a HiFi system it's worth the extra space of Apple Lossless.
