Riot at the Rite
Posted by: Basil on 08 March 2006
BBC2 9pm Saturday 11th
Feature-length drama chronicling preparations for the first-ever staging of The Rite of Spring in Paris during 1913 - a ballet that was to change the face of dance for ever. Masterminded by the Russian impresario Sergei Diaghiliev, choreographed by his lover, Nijinsky - arguably the greatest male dancer of all time - and with a score by Igor Stravinsky, a genius on the threshold of international notoriety, the production provoked a riot in the theatre that will be remembered as the most scandalous premiere in the history of the arts. Stars Adam Garcia, Alex Jenkins and Aiden Mcardle
Not to be missed!

Hope PBS picks it up so we can see it on the other side of the Atlantic....classical music, dance and violence, an irresistible combination....

I posted this as a reminder for myself as much as anything! I do not want to miss it.

Excuse the bump, nothing new to add just want to keep this on the front page as a reminder.
Yes, my memory is that bad!

The rather lovely Emma Pierson (recently in Hotel Babylon) is in the cast, so that's another reason to watch.

Sounds really hot, I just heard it in concert see the Rite thread. the talk before hand said at one point the french rioted inside, people were fighting, booing and clapping with Najinsky in the wings shouting counts to keep his cdancers on tempo. and someone was turning the lights on and off trying to get the crowd's attention and control. Sounds like a good time to me.
when we were listening to the rite in concert the first half ends and the quiet of the second begins. My friend leaned over to me and says " I think I know when they rioted" It's very intense.
Pina Bausch performed it in LA for teh Olympics in 84. she wanted a foot of dirt on the stage floor and the dancers to be nude. The olympic arts commitee siad NO WAY, what would people think? She returned that she would not do it then. It was finally agreed just a day beforehand and the performance was a sell out all three nights. Wish I'd seen it. The dancers were interviewed and they said it was the most exciting performance they'd ever been in. The earthy smell and feel of the soil underneath their feet was probably more important than being nude. Hooray for Pina!!!

If Emma was the lead babe dancer she did it for me.

'the chosen virgin' role was played by prima ballerina Zinaida Yanowsky.
Breathtaking, simply breathtaking.

Very, very good.
The Rite of Spring has really turned into an orchestral showpiece these days, and this was rather anticipated by the throwaway line at the end with Stravinsky saying that he looked forward to the orchestral concert. Is it ever produced as ballet now (allowing for the nude LA performance described above)?
I didn't see the credits properly. Who were the actual performers and conductor - a Swedish ballet company (and orchestra)?
(And Emma was as delicious as could have been expected. I wish that I had a dressing room where she could proposition me.)

Dear Graham,
Dressing room or no dressing room, Emma can proposition me wherever she likes.

To paraphrase The Beatles, I'd do it in the road!

Nerd note: Many people assume that this was a Lennon song, but it was written by Paul.
