The things people don't say anymore

Posted by: Diccus62 on 03 July 2007

Folk don't seem to 'Have it off' anymore. I'm not sure what they were having off but they don't seem to anymore. You also don't appear to 'Get your leg over' much either. We apparently Shag, make love, bonk, F**k and other term's for close bonding instead.

Got me to thinking (oh god how it hurts) what other grand terms have been 'put to bed' for want of a better term?

Growing old.

I find that people that worry about money tend not to have a sufficiency of it.

Big Grin

Yes I am - I remember Anne Jones and Virginia Wade.

I think I can remember Miss Wade, certainly as a person if not a winner at Wimbledon, but I suppose I was thinking of a British mens winner, which is a bit of an unintentional male chauvinst bit of a Freudian slip. Never mind. Whem did Miss Wade win? I really only got interested in it about the time of Jimmy Conners and I do remember Arthur Ashe, in the seventies. At that time I really followed Cricket, and have dond memories of listening to the test series with Tony Gregg as captain in the series [1973?] against the Windies...

Dear Fredrik

Virginia Wade won three Grand Slam singles titles and four Grand Slam doubles titles. She won the singles title at Wimbledon in the championship's Centenary year (1st July 1977) beating dutch girl, Betty Stove 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Before that she won the US Open (1968) beating Billie Jean King and the Australian Open (1972) beating Evonne Goolagong - both in straight sets.

Her four doubles wins were with Margaret Court as her partner: Australian, French and US (1973) and US again in 1975.

Anne Jones won the French in 61 and 66 (good year for British sport) and Wimbledon in 1969 beating Billie Jean King 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. I remember it being on the radio when I was at school. In those days the ladies' final was on a Friday.

For men - we are back with Fred Perry, which was before my time.

1976 England v W-Indies with England led by Tony Greig who welcomed the visitors in friendly fashion with the announcement I intend to make them grovel. The W.Indies duly beat us 3-0. Still it's difficult to argue against Greig not being a useful payer he scored 3599 runs at an average of just over 40 and took well over 100 wickets in his test career.

I remember watching this match. It was the Queen's Silver Jubilee in June and the Queen watched the match and presented the prize which was nice. Despite her oft reputed high IQ I find Miss Wade's tennis commentary to be deadly dull and lacking in insight. Betty Stove was not a pretty sight as I recall.

Dear ROTF,

Can you remember these things just like that! If so well done, you're far better than me!

I suppose by 1977 I was working quite hard on the farm and truth to tell did not spend much time in the house except for food or sleeping - well the daily bath!

I do remember the Silver Jubilee. I was spot spraying docks in a seed clover patch listening to the radio broadcast of it all on the then brand new tractor we had, which had a cab and a radio. seems hard to believe that the other tractors were all open top then! Saved demisting the screen in the cold though. That summer was also rather warm, though not like 1976.

PS: This is the same as our best tractor at the time! A Massey Ferguson 65

Later that summer I was very ill and it all went into a bit of a blur!
