Al*** art in N-Serve

Posted by: fps1k on 23 October 2010

Hi, perhaps someone can point me in the right direction here...I have a Uniti, just upgraded to version 3.0 and am now using the N-Serve software to control it. Which is great. I have FLAC files for streaming audio that I have converted from Apple Lossless in iTunes (via a MAC). The album art has not come over in the conversion and I am struggling to find a way to edit the metadata tags so that the N-Serve ap shows them. Any thoughts? Re-ripping from cd to FLAC is fine, however I have a large number of files and was not wanting to do this all over again. Thanks.

Have you tried embedding the artwork directly into the FLAC file using something like Mp3tag? I would have thought the artwork should display when embedded?

There may be an easier way but I suspect the Server is not passing the artwork. Someone with a Uniti may have a specific solution.

What are you using as he Server to stream he music?

Thanks for the prompt reply, Jack. I'm using Twonky Media server via a NAS. Strangely, some album art is viewable - when ripped directly from a CD. I just can't see it after converting from Lossless to FLAC. I tried MP3tag a short time ago, but couldn't get the artwork to display either.

If you load the FLAC file into Mp3tag and the artwork displays when you click on the file but wont display when streamed then I would have to image its something to do with compatibility between Twonky and the Uniti.

Hopefully some owners of the Uniti will share their experiences on a successful combination or way around it.

Another good reason why it would be great to see Naim rubber stamp a non-Naim server solution that works with their streamer products! I think Linn do this?

Makes sense to me, would be happy to pay for a server that has full functionality, or even better - if the Uniti supported streaming Apple Lossless.

Just checking but I assume you meant N-Stream not N-Serve given you are using the Uniti?

I use iTunes to embed the album artwork into the ALAC. Then I use AssetUPnP to stream music to the Qute. Album artwork is displayed on my n-Stream beautifully. Qute just works better with n-Stream's GUI.

Hi Jack, yes, my mistake - I m using the N-Stream...

Thanks p3esr, I'll try your suggestion and let you know how I get on. The album art thing s quite annoying, especially as it worked so well in iTunes using the Touch remote on an Apple TV.

Hi fPs1k

I'm Using eyeconnect and n- stream with the uniti and although it works a combination of eye's rather clumsy file organisation, speed of n- stream and lack of album art have left me looking for a better solution.

This could either be streaming via a Mac with Remote as a control or UPnP with Vortexbox/ or other software server.

I agree that the lack of Naim certified UPnP server (outside of the Unitiserve) is a bit of a pain but since the Unitiserve has Windows only web software I'm not going down that route.

The sound of the Uniti via UPnP is excellent - particularly mp3 which is a bit of a revelation. Just wish it was a bit easier.

Interesting thread...I've been wondering why artwork does not show on my iTouch, since it is
in the folders I've downloaded recently from
Linn. The files reside on my new Linkstation,
all FLAC HQ, which play beautifully on my Uniti.
But the other problem is I so far can only access the library of files via the folders I have purposely set up, [Classical, jazz etc],
or via 'songs'...but not from genre, artist,
or album names. [This may be in another thread].
When I play a music files, the iTouch screen shows the name of the file, but 'Unknown' for artist and album. What to use for that info to be seen?

I am quite ignorant about these things. But trying out what I thinks you mean has not provided the artwork. Can I just explain what I did? The sleeve photo within the album folder is a .png, so I copied it and changed the .png to .jpg. I refreshed the Linkstation Then I looked in the n-Stream but there is no image.
I also tried changing the name of the jpeg to 'folder.jpg' to no avail. Neither of these attempts must not be what you meant.

I haven't even tried to sort out the itunes library yet.

You can't just change .png to .jpg.
Those are two different formats.
No program will be able to display a .jpg when it is inside really a .png.

You really need to convert a .png to .jpg

On a PC MS Office Picture Manager could do that, but there are plenty of freeware programs on the net that convert picture formats.

Thanks for that feedback, guys...I'll try again when I get home tonight. Presumably I can convert the file within Photoshop. I use a Mac so will look at the programs which suit.

I do it all of the time. Simply change the file extension to ".jpg"

Easy as can be.

That is not your problem.
