Naim with PMC Speakers
Posted by: elee on 25 September 2003
I'm currently using CD5 + FCII + TAG McLaren Amplifier + PMC FB1.
I'm planning to get Naim amp (probably 112/150) in the future.
Does Naim + FB1 sounds good?
Cheers.

In a word: no
PMC FB1s on the end of Naim amps sound slow and veiled in the midband. Great bass, but you'll soon get bored of hearing not a lot else in the music.
I laid the blame at the door of the PMCs but I guess I was wrong because many PMC users swear by their Bryston amps. I guess these speakers need a lot of Watts to get them going.
With Naim amps (82/Hi/250) my Rega Naos speakers (also transmission lines) were a lot more musical - more quick, articulate and open in the midband, although the bass didn't quite rattle the door hinges in the same way as the PMCs.
There's driving them and driving them properly. I reckon that the FB1s would need at least a Nap 300 in the Naim range to get them really moving.
Regards,
Steve.

Well they certainly sound sh*t with a 180.
If you've gotta have PMCs get a big Bryston to drive 'em. Now that works

Greetings Steve
Yeah, bitter experience is right. A fiasco from start to finish with those speakers.
FB1s also have a nasty honk in the midband which can really grate after a while. I'd be VERY CAREFUL and have an extended home trial before you lay down the cash. Repent at leisure and all that..

elee,
I see that the usual suspects have posted their usual damnation of the FB1 ......sigh.
Whilst this is obviously their experience, it is one which I just don't understand.
I have CDX,112/150,FC2,NACA5, and added the FB1's about a year ago. In my opinion, the speakers are excellent.
I don't know whether they are somewhat room-dependent, and that is the reason for the disparity of opinions; all I know is that they sound great in my system in my room. This is an opinion shared by friends.
The only way to find out is to give them an audition in your own room, and compare them with others.

Yep
What I'm saying..
Turn off all critical faculties, forget HIFI and just listen
Your ears will surely be your best guide

I'll throw in my tuppenyworth here. I used to drive Linn Saras with my 92/90.3 and really thought it was very good and was very satisfied with the sound and thought that the comments of others as to the difficulty of saras was at most exagerated. Indeed I commented on this in quite a few posts. Then I got a 250 and even with the 92 pre the difference was startling, much, much more of everything both PRaT and Hifi wise.
Many of the views hear are, I beleive, from people who havent heard the benefits of using better amps to drive speakers and may well be content with what they are getting. Lesser amps on difficult speakers will mean you only realise about 40% to 50% of what the sistem is really capable of. Go and do the comparisons at a good dealers or alternatively at friends who have this gear and then decide what's the best way to go.

Thanks all for precious comments.
I think I'll try to borrow 112/150 from my friend and give it a try.
Just another question. Will 202/200 fit FB1 better as 200 has 40% more power than 150?

OK..maybe its not a "honk"
More of a "bray" perhaps. Or a "blare"..
A blaring bray or a braying blare? Take yer pick

I am still very impressed by my TB1's at the end of my Nait2 for all sorts of music. And they go loud as well.(Rammstein is marching through the room every now and then) Those Tiny Boxes make many far larger speakers work for their money.
I am going to try a 62/hi/140 shortly and I am very curious whether this (power) upgrade will be worth its price.
I have got a older model (backlit but with the large knobs) Nait2 and had the opportunity of trying an olive Nait2 (Recapped but -sadly- not by Naim) and rejected the new model because of its sound I did not like. Sharp edges and no coherence.
The TB1's made the difference very clear.

Just borrow a Nait 5 from the dealer today. It sounds good with my CD5/FCII and PMC Speakers.

CD5 200/202 PMC OB1
My 2p for what it's worth. The FB1's sound great with a 112/150 no worries there if you go that route after sifting through all the advice. I was set on buying these myself but like a fool I auditioned the OB1's and to my ears they were simply amazing so I coughed up the extra and went way over budget. Both the FB1 & OB1 delivered far more on the end of the 200/202 though. Upgrades for later then...
By the way - the FB1's and OB1's have no magnetic shielding, it's an option at £100 so worth a haggle with the dealer if this is a necessity.
