Gianluigi if you could see the f**king mess I have made of this door, then I might have well been reading in italian!
The doors is not to bad (I made that) but the frame is a mess, so I will have to attack it again tomorrow.

Oh yes its actually a door, between the sitting room and kitchen. I have made a simple pine door with z cladding on the back, this was relatively easy.
Fitting it into the little space has proved more difficult. Somewhere in the recesses of my tiny brain a little voice was telling me you couldn't really fit a door into a single framed section, and the reality is just that, you need double frame. I could only get the hinge to fit in one configuration, which although sturdy is not ideal. And the latch fitting needed some real work to get going.
Still filled a day up I spose.

A friend of mine tried the same for days with an old door found by an antiques dealer once.
At last he decided to let it open and not movable.
It seemed more "artistical"!

I have fitted recycled doors to most of my humble abodes including making most of the frames. Usually because old houses (cottages in particular) have doors made for those under 5' in former times and I get sick of banging my head!
I'm afraid I haven't a clue what you're talking about garyi. It must be the terminology.
Are you talking about suffolk latches? A thumb plate and lever that pierces the door and lifts another lever on the other side of the door? Once popular for garden doors an gates?
Don't you have any neighbours who spend all their time hammering and sawing? It's usually a sign of basic competence. At least in finding the local doctor's surgery.
If you want advice from a wide range of home DIY and some tradesmen experts try the Google DIY (UK based) group.
This link works for me but you may have to join before posting.

Hi Nime yes it is a suffolk latch.
The problem was in the fact the door fitted to the frame and not into the frame.
This caused many many problems, including the need to chip out the frame for the hinge to close (traditonal hinge) and of course the suffolk latch hook had no where to go.
In the end I bodged it up and it looks rustic to say the least:

Er-um..Garyi...you seems to have the hinges and latch on the wrong side of the door...?
They go on the side that opens outwards. With the short hinge flaps on the face of the frame.
The thumb press part of the latch goes on this side.
Er...nice piccy?

Thats my point. Because the door closes onto the frame you couldn't put the hinges on the other side, the door closes over the frame. Thats why the door needed to fit inside the frame onto an inner frame so that a. the hinges could be put on the right side and b. the latch could be fitted correctly. At the moment its a right bodge lol.

That's why they invented saws and planes Garyi.
The door is made to fit the hole. Not the other way round.
A bit of Pollyfilla and it'll be fine.

I think the easist move from here is to draw a line around where the door meets the hole. cut the excess, fit an inner frame and do it properly.
Of course not being very good at DIY I rushed it, and in future I might invest in one of those saddo DIY books, but hopefully get it right.
Also my tool case consists of three screwdrivers a saw and a hammer

When in Doupt, get a chippy in, It will be a better job, and save you money in the long run.I think the best advice would be to use one of your three screw drivers to screw the tool box shut then throw the remaining screw driver away as far as you can
