What a lovely performance. Hope she's coming back to play a few more shows than the website is currently showing.

Ditto, 1 gig each in Scotland and Ireland is a bit mean, IMO.
Not sure about her website though or is it a MAC /Firefox thing?

When I saw her a couple of months ago she indicated she would be back for a tour. Hopefully she'll have mastered the words by then

Maybe she will announce gigs when the new album is released in April.

Leave Your Sleep, Natalie Merchant's first studio album since 2003’s The House Carpenter’s Daughter, releases April 6, 2010, on Nonesuch Records. This release is the culmination of seven years’ research and collaboration and is, in Merchant’s words, “the most elaborate project I have ever completed or even imagined.”
A two-disc set, Leave Your Sleep is a collection of songs adapted from poems selected by Merchant including pieces by both well-known and obscure writers. Featured are works by British Victorians, early- and mid-20th century Americans and contemporary writers as well as anonymous nursery rhymes and lullabies. Among the authors included are Ogden Nash, e.e. cummings, Robert Louis Stevenson, Christina Rossetti, Edward Lear, Gerard Manley Hopkins, and Robert Graves.
In addition to a new method of lyricism, Merchant stretches out musically on Leave Your Sleep by collaborating with a broad spectrum of artists—some old friends, some she has admired from afar—including the Wynton Marsalis Quartet, Medeski Martin & Wood, members of the New York Philharmonic, The Klezmatics, Lúnasa and Hazmat Modine. “The sessions were recorded in live ensemble settings to capture a fresh and spontaneous energy,” notes Merchant. “They were some of the most magical experiences I’ve ever had making music.”

Ok. I've seen tons of posts recently regarding Natalie Merchant, but I've not heard of her before. So i have become intrigued and need to buy a cd of hers. Would anyone care to suggest a good place to start? Or would 10 000 Maniacs be a better place?
Cheers, Paul.

My faves are her solo albums Tigerlily and Ophelia. Beautiful stuff. I prefer her in solo guise.

That was quick.
Cheers Adrian, I'll go for Tigerlily first I think.

Liked 10,000 maniacs and Tigerlily but 'Ophelia' left me cold. The idea of 'Poetry set to music' is inducing a gag reflex almost as irrepressible as the one whatching Kirsty Wark rocking back and forth on the Newsnight sofa.
Got a bit to 'knowing' and indulgent for me I'm afraid.

Hi Stu. That's the one I was thinking of with my initial post. I seem to have seen it quite often recently, so I'll get that one too.
Cheers, Paul.

Ophelia would probably be my fave of hers although it is a close run thing with Tigerlily.
I have heard lots of the new album when I saw her live. She really did like all the obscure poets and their lyrics. The album has a cast of hundreds on it. Will be interesting to hear and am looking forward to it.

Bought 'Human Conflict Number Five', then got distracted by other bands. Came back to 10,000 Maniacs at 'In My Tribe' after hearing the track 'Don't Talk' - it's a good place to start re the studio albums.
Favourite track is 'Can't Ignore The Train' on 'The Wishing Chair' - also like the Popguns version.
Cheers,
OW

Never made the connection between 10,000 Maniacs and NM before I read this thread. Listening to "Tigerlily" right now.

To my ears, if you want a real treat get the Mobile-Fidelity version of Tigerlily.
Lots more presence and bass-lines in it.
Blows the ordinary CD version (which is good) away.

Ewemon, I'd be interested in any observation you have on the glasgow gig that some of us had to miss due to bloody work commitments
!

The songs shown weren't from the gig itself they were from a session of 4 songs she played at BBC Scotlands Quay studios. The rest of the tracks can be viewed on line on the BBC Scotland web site.
Ian will give you a proper review tomorrow as I am to bed up early.
