Living in one EU country and getting paid in the UK
Posted by: Stephen Bennett on 15 September 2006
Hi all
I'm moving to Sweden where I'll be self-employed. Most of my income (initially, at least) will be coming from work in the UK.
Does anyone know what the tax situation will be in this scenerio? Also, what about the best way to transfer dosh from pounds to kronor?
I will be taking advice on this, but I know some of you are financial experts, so I thought I'd ask!
Regards
Stephen

It could be slightly improved if you ever get round to finishing that second Henry Fool album...

Open a Nationwide Flexaccount in the UK.
Put lots of lovely dosh in it.
Withdraw using the debitcard at a hole in the wall in Sweden.
You get the bank rate for exchange £ to euros.
Nationwide charge nothing for the service unlike every other greedy bugger.
recommended by several moneysites and what I use for my regular sojourns in France.

I believe that the foreign ATM's are soon to charge nationwide customers for the service.
I don't know when this starts and what the charge is.

Thanks for the warning Mick. I'll have to look into it.

My research suggests that ATMs in banks are fee free the world over for Debit cards. As in the UK ATMs in malls or bars probably charge, but they charge everyone, noy just Nationwide. Can you remember where you sourced your info about Nationwide?

I am off to Spain next next to finally buy the house out there.
I have made several interim visits and have always paid by credit card for most purchases.
I have noticed that since early this year, the CC company is loading charges everywhere, so hopefully next week I will be using a spanish CC which will be paid for from my spanish account.
As a precaution and on the advice of a friend, I lobbed some cash into my Nationwide flexaccount with the intention of drawing from it at nil cost.
I was in the Swindon branch of the Nationwide yesterday where a cashier advised me of the impending charges.

Does your Spanish bank account have hefty bank charges as my French one does?

No

Hi Stephen, you should get confirmation from the tax office on this, but from my experience you will be liable for tax in the country where you declare residence for this purpose.
Your self-employed status will make it different from my case where I was technically on secondment in an EU country so paid tax there and NI in the UK. You can do this for a maximum of 5 years.
From what you say, it would look like you're going to have to go onto the Swedish system. Check with an accountant though.
Hope this helps.
