Gunnar´s got a new rack
Posted by: Gunnar Jansson on 10 October 2002
Hi!
Due to the many replies and recommendations on my last topic I must come back and tell what I bought.
A used mana acoustic amp rack. pristine condition. About 400£ (Well in the budget)
A fellow Stockholmer sold it to me. 4 shelves.
As I wrote; no comparative audiotion prior to me getting this, due to the lack of racks recommended by members in store at the dealers here.
What I´ve got is a clear sonic improvement in all areas when playing cd´s.
The planar 3 has not improved at all, rather a downgrading when placed on top of the manarack.
Very sensitive to footfall.Probably due to the condition of the floor.
Somehow it was expected after reading Mike Sae´s very imformative homepage.
-Is there a way to avoid wallmounting?
-I don´t want a spiked lack as a sideboard.
Anyway. I´m very happy and enjoying cd´s much more than ever. The craving to get a Cdx is tamed at some extent. (probably not for long)
If I do want to improve my mana rack in the future, what do you recommend?
And the WAF? Higher than expected. She didn´t yell at me. Rather she thinks it looks rather cool.

Chaps
The looks really do go out the window when you add soundstages.

Gunnar,
I've also found the Planar 3 doesn't improve much (if at all) when on top of a multi tiered amp rack. However, I don't think it's worse.
How is it worse?
Your Planar might need some freshening up: lightly tighten the cartridge bolts and the main arm nut (whose proper names escape me), re-level etc...
You're in a bit of a quandry, since you prefer not to wall mount, but have footfall problems.
You definately want to avoid any heavy mass solution; it might cure the footfall, but will kill the Planar.
Why don't you want to wall mount?

Short Mana is lovely.
My gap toothed phase 2 seven tier is not.

Mike!
Thanks for your reply. Like to say that I really find your homepage very interrsting and full of insight. There´s lot of information to be retrieved to a not so experienced audiofile like me.
The planar simply lost it´s "life". Don`t know how to else describe it. It´s extremely sensitive to footfall.
It doesn´t swing and is lifeless. I have made the fine tuning that I believe is possible. Like tightening the tonearm etc.
We both now how good a planar can be and this is nothing near. It played on par or sometimes noticable better than the cd3. I do believe it´s due to the stand. (Had it wall mounted before)
That wallmounting was a constom made shelf.
Why I don´t want to wallmount again?
The gear is sited in our livingroom wich has been redecorated , new wallpaper etc, etc. Been working every free hour in 5 veeks and I somehow feel a reluctance to drill holes in this relly good looking wall. (if a wall can look good)
As I see it either a wallmount or another player. Is a LP 12 an option? or am I going to have the same problem.
Anyway it´s a shame with a good player like the planar 3.
Jonas! Make me an offer I can´t resist.

Dozy
Thanks. Missed out your reply at first.
Thanks for the tip. I´ll give him a call.
But it´s most certainly the floor that´s matter.
I´ts levelled and the glass shelves are stable.
Btw I never could imagine what a good stand could do to the overall performance! Nice!

p.s. that´s to say in my case, with cd replay

Hi Gunnar,
I don't blame you for not wanting to punch holes in the wall.
I've never owned the LP12, so perhaps others can suggest if a Linn is less prone to footfall vs. a Rega?

Hi!
Thanks James and Mike.
Yep. It looks like I have to wallmount.
If I get a LP12 in the future it will most likely benefit from wallmounted shelf too.

Hi!
Missed out your replies Paul D and L-ken.
Thanks both.
Paul good point about getting the proper screws.
I´ve got a brick wall behind and with a proper mounting it should definately hold.
And yes, soundstages etc. is on the shoppinglist.
Thats because:
After the initial happiness of an improved performance the gear sounds even better!
Is it due to the fact that the ampstage has settled? Well I don´t know. It´s just a pleasure to listen to cd replay and mind you with my modest cd3.
It´s almost like a cd3 is well enough for me. sounds damned fine.
CDs that have been not so revarding soundwise is now is listenable.
Can´t really understand how a stand can make such a difference.
Makes me wonder how good a cdx and a 82/hi would sound at my place.......
The thing that I found though is that even with more "simple" gear it is very rewarding when you put them on good support. So on a budget good stands must be taken in and probably not compromised with. But I gather you knew all this.
