New CMX CD Format?

Really?

It just looks like they are trying to cram as much data onto a CD as possible, surely leaving less space for the music itself?

It will apparently make 'CDs a bought media again' or something. Ive not heard much about it, but it strikes me as a bad idea already. Surely the record companies should be looking at the quality of the music on CDs at the moment, instead of filling them with 'album artwork, lyrics, videos, liner notes and mobile content'.

There is a very short snippet on wired.co.uk if anyone fancies a look.

Has anyone read more about it and know the ins and outs?

Cheers

Being an old fart I remember the days when LP's were max 25 mins a side - 50 mins total. Most modern CD recordings, especially pop/rock are over long, and would be improved by taking out 2 or 3 filler tracks and leaving a tighter, better constructed album.

They can use the remainder of the 68 mins running time for whatever they want. Pictures and lyrics take up bugger all space compressed.

As I understand it, CMX is being developed as a download format only. The idea is to encourage purchase of the entire album, rather than just individual tracks.

Apple is said not to be on board; they are working on an alternative, dubbed "Cocktail."
