What makes a great design? Form and function in harmony? What is your favourite?

I am only giving my ideas on things, they are not set in stone.

I think "And's" posying of concorde is gonna take some beating.
Concorde was certainly one of the events & icons of the last century.
Even if it was designed by committee, build quality was sometimes iffy, & the whole thing was spoilt by politics!
matt.

I think you can generally take as red a design icon when it becomes part of the vocabulary of its area. Such as many of us say I need a new Hoover.
Indeed, it appears half of the postings talk about design icons, another half talk about beautiful design, and a third half about good functional design. Approximately. 3 threads anyone

And a fourth half: The Shell logo. Zappa's mustache. Marilyn Monroe.

This had quite an impact at the time, the design and construction of the case was almost anal in the concern that was taken compared to the cases that are used today.

I nomminate the Parker 51 Fountain Pen. Art Deco in styling and yet the most practical pen you can ever use. The case in indestructable, the nib is rarely damaged and the thing holds one hell of a lot of ink.
This pen is plain bloody bomb proof.
If you want to see what they look like, click

I have eight of them and they seduce my hand into a style of writing that no other pen can match.

Mick,
I thought you'd be more of a Duofold man.

A Hammock.
How can anything so simple be so comfortable. I dream about a hammock on a beach like this.
That was a poor example, Eric. The waves on the picture is way too high.

Herre Gud, you may be right..but then again...some wind to keep you cool and move the hammock from side to side would be a good thing. Actually I am looking to buy a beach like this in the Philippines and build a house on it because I cant afford to live in England (or Norway)and in general the waves are quite calm. This photo is from hawaii and its been altered of course.
Med Venlig Hilsen,
Erik

To be a good design, things should be useful and work well.

Pity you didn't polish up the Dualit, I think you should have shown the 4 slot version which most of us regard as the true icon.

This is another Icon for the ultimate watering can.
Some of these are now approaching 100 years of age.
I have 4 of them and they are perfect.

Ah, see?
The 51 might be an icon, but the Duofold writes better.

To be honest, the 51 does write better.
The Duolfold has a nicer looking nib but the 51 is more altogether.

A little bit of Cokelore...The original contour of the "Mae West" bottle or as it latterly became known the "hobble skirt" bottle was designed in 1915.
