***Help with CD3.5 & Hi-Cap***
Posted by: shinpad on 18 August 2002
I need some help setting up a Hi-Cap to power my 3.5!
I have removed the link plug from the back of the 3.5 and connected a 240 degree 5 pin din connector to socket 4 of the Hi-Cap, but when I switch the Hi-Cap on the CD doesn't power up??? I have checked the cables (and the Hi-Cap itself) by powering the pre amp, and it all works.
Am I doing something wrong????
Any help greatly appreciated.![confused](/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif)

Shinpad (I'll leave comments on your extraordinary moniker to Lord Parry of Swindon),
Perhaps you were thinking HiCapping the CDP works the same as HiCapping a pre - i.e. you're not powering the 3.5 from the mains? Well, you should. On CD players the HiCap powers the analogue filters, while the regular power feed takes care of the rest. So plug in that power cord.

Herman, thanks for the reply. I had a horrible feeling this was the case!!
When set up like this how can you tell the Hi-Cap is actually doing anything???? Assuming you can't hear the difference!!!
Anyway, thanks for the help - and what's wrong with my moniker??!?!

That's the funny thing with these PSU upgrades. They don't move the earth for you straight away. However, you will notice the difference if you unplug the HC.
Your moniker is funny in that it's not a person's name. Very few parents will call their kids Shinpad, Kneecap or Nosebleed - at least in my neck of les forêts.
Obviously you missed the discussion on Boybander names, and that makes you a very lucky Shinpad.
I can tell you like exclamation marks. You should meet Mr Nuño sometime.
Keep posting.

Yep, unplug the hicap..and see if you can live without it.
If you can't hear a difference your options are a) your deaf
b) you haven't plugged in properly
Believe me the change is nice....., check you've got the black snaic.
Have fun!![big grin](/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif)

The very first time I heard a Naim system, it was a CD3.5/Nait3. It sounded a bit ragged (and didn't go very loud
) so I asked my dealer what could be done about it.
He added a Flatcap, and it made a big difference.
Bigger soundstage, better dynamics, better control, better resolution...
I have since heard a Flatcap versus a Hi-cap, and it's more of the same again. Thus the leap from "naked" CD3.5 to a Hi-capped one is going to be a big improvement.
Regards,
Steve.

I agree 100% - the hi-cap has made a big difference and it was well worth the £350. Almost sounds like a different cd player!
As for Hi-Capping a shinpad.......well, that's another story!

I had a brief look at the thread mentioned above about boybanderz, or something, and it seems that not posting under your full name pisses some people off
oh well, that's a shame![big grin](/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif)

I assume this is a joke, Dozy, coming from you. However, if you look at my posts you'll see my username is Herm, but I sign my posts with the same name as everybody calls me, i.e.
Herman
PS what I find funny about a name like Shinpad is, it's not just his username (perhaps his real name is John Smith, and it's already been taken), but he that it's also the name with which we're supposed to address him.

I don't think anyone's taking it seriously
I've used the name Shinpad for years on loads of different sites, but my name is Graham if you prefer.
cheers
