iPhone Charging on Naim DAC

Posted by: pcstockton on 02 June 2010

I thought I read that the DAC will charge the iPhone/Touch while it is streaming. In the manual it mentions consumption and refers to charging "iPods".

Does this mean it only charges iPods? It doesn't charge my iPhone.

If this is the case, it seems odd that it will charge iPod which are only used for playback. The iTouch/Phone are to be used as a Upnp streamer which presupposes that you would leave it permanently tethered.

Exactly how is the charging supposed to work?

Thanks,
Patrick

Have to try @home tonight, the manual mentioned that you can turn charging on or off.

Naim DAC is able to charge my iPhone 3GS. Press the Dock button for 1s to charge or to stop charging.

Sweet!

OK maybe my whole issue with USB sticks is due tio not knowing how this puppy works.

When I insert a USB stick what should happen?

AS of now, the best I can get is it lights the dock button but doesn't autostart. I have to hit "Play" then "dock" then it plays.

If the USB is not removed, the dock button starts autoplay EVERY time.

Thanks p3esr!

Yes!!!!!! That did the trick! I dont recall that in the manual. May be time for a re-read.

FYI, plugging in the iPhone lights up "Dock" and starts autoplaying every time.

Glad it worked out.

It was mentioned in the manual, in fact, it said to turn off charging for better sound.

For my case, the DAC will autoplay the WAV files once I plug in the USB memory stick. My iPhone is connected to the rear USB port. So if the memory stick is plugged in to the front port, it'll take over the function.

I only scanned the DAC manual...the pdf version that is as I'm yet to unpack the manual shipped with my unit...!

Is there a way of switching off the Auto Play function as the USB stick is inserted?

Also, how do you achieve gaps between WAV files?
At the moment I getting play back with no breaks/gaps between songs/files.

TIA

Gapless playback is a good thing...think of albums where one track plays seemlessly through to the next track...Neil Diamonds Hot August Night comes to mind where Prologue and Crunchy Granola Suite play as one track...

You get gaps between wav-files at the moment of ripping your CD, not a the moment of playback.

You should tell the ripping software to add the gaps that are present on the CD to the end of the previous song. That way the music will start immediately and going from song to song, it will have the gaps as it was on the CD. Many software programs for ripping also allow you to add a standard amount of time (e.g. 2 sec) to the tracks, regardless of how long the gap was on the CD.

If you ripped your CD without any gaps, a good sofware player will play them without any gaps.
