Am I being a plum?

I've just swapped from NACA4 to NACA5. I've looked through a bunch of related postings (yup, need to cut off the negative 'ears'). Still, I am fearing that I've not got it right, and despite the assurances of my dealer, I just want to double check.
Channel 1 (left) refers to my left when I am looking at the speakers, not the Nait's left. Consequently, the speaker cables have to cross over one another, correct? If I do it this way, the balance control increases the volume of the speaker on my left as I am looking at them, when the control is turned anticlockwise.
BTW, I found an old post by Ozren asking why the left hand speaker is 10% louder when the balance is central. Whilst this matches my experience, and reassures me somewhat, I note that this is because the Nait's balance control doesn't work like most (according to my dealer, again). Channel 2 is unaffected, Channel 1 just gets louder (towards anticlockwise) and quieter. I find that I have to turn it about 70% of the way to the clockwise stop for it to be set correctly.

You got it right. Ch1 is the LH channel as you face the speakers. You should find that if you get this wrong all the life goes out of the music and you end up going to do something else instead.

Any idea why it was designed that way? It seems odd to have to cross over the speaker cables.
For what it's worth, I was tapping my foot like a goon last night, so I guess it must be right.
That, or the medication is wearing off.

Why was it designed that way...
Bloody minded techies concerned with engineering principles over usability I suppose. Since I tend to subscribe to this pov myself I'm not complaining.

Hi Mekon !
The balance problem on Nait 2 comming from something like "standing electricity" or "stand by electric" (don't know the right word for that). It can be fixed if you have some Nait2 service manual and basic electrotechnical knowledge. Until then, you can do nothing about that. That stuff going to my nerves, especially when my wife and son going to sleep and I want to listen something on low volume level. I have still Nait2, but also preparing money for 202/200. As you live in UK I can strongly suggest you to go for 32.5/140, that would be a real step forward to the point where serious fun begin. I don't have s/h options in my Mickey Mouse country and that thing would be more sad, if I buy something in UK, it will needed a voltage conversion. So go on, use your living position oportunity.

Yeah, I keep eyeing up the s/h market, but I am currently a lowly research student. My funding doesn't end until October '04, and if I finish my PhD early, I have to give the research council some money back. I think given my current circumstances, I'd be better off getting the Nait serviced, and waiting until I have a 'proper job' before I embark on some serious updgrading.

given that you've mastered the art of levitation on that funny floaty little airspace tug thing, surely moving your amp from between the speakers is an obvious solution to someone of your intergalactic intelligence? Then you wouldn't need to wonder about the speaker cables crossing!
As for balance control offing - are you using CD? Building an attenuated interconnect such that you're running the Nait vol control at a higher region of its sweep will largely eliminate the channel imbalance. Chord Co. can make one for you, or you could lash one up for yourself with an intergalactic sonic soldering iron, some heatshrink, and asisstance from your pals Digby and Sir Hubert.
