Valve amp for Ipod...

Posted by: Ancipital on 06 March 2007

In my travels, spotted this.

It's a valve amp with an Ipod dock.

I've seen this is in the window of John Lewis in London. Don't know what it sounds like, but why did they have to put such a dumb logo on the front ?

How much does it cost, compared to say a nice, well kept, Nait 1 or 2 ?

£280. Not bad. I think I need one.

There's a one box combi Ipod dock, cd player, tuner, amp thing out from Shanling with their usual valvey bits I believe. about £500.

I heard one of these recently in Singapore.
A half decent attempt to polish a turd.

Which, a Shanling or an Ipod?

The sound that a Fatman makes, even with a rega apollo plugged in can only be discribed as TURGID...sloppy bass, badly timed...horrible.

Buy hey they look nice (apart from that logo on the front) and I would probably own one to use out in the garage while working on my car.

Shanling - I presume; if it is anything like their rather horrible CD players.

The TLAudio iTube.

TLAudio are renowned for producing average quality compressors and effects for semi-pro recording studios. If possible, they'll stuff a couple of valves in the circuit to make it appeal to the retro-heads, and stick a cheap price tag on the box.

A couple of their 'Fatman' products, the 'Fat Funker' compressor and '2 Fat' which is a front-end for guitar amps are reasonable value for the home studio, and championed by Coldplay's Guy Berriman.... Not that I hold much by that particular credit.

Now that the world in general has forgotten what real hi-fi is (present company excepted) these 'tube amps' for the iPod are designed to appeal to the retrophile rather than the audiophile, I reckon. They're Chinese-built valve amps, and thus produced very cheaply. I believe they are intending to bring out a full range of iPod amps, the smallest of which is the current iTube model.

For £280 it is actually a decent bit of kit if you allow for what it does, and the cheeky style with which it does it. We all realise that mp3 players are not hi-fi, but sadly, very few people do these days, and many more who do realise it gladly trade the portability and convenience that they deliver for ultimate fidelity, and sadly, for the moment at least, it's a format that's here to stay.

Half decent attempt to polish a turd is a very accurate description, but don't forget the 'half decent' bit of that comment.

I believe Carroll Shelby said, "You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear - but you can make a mighty fast pig."
