Mordaunt short Performance

Posted by: Phill82 on 20 January 2004

When I first got into hifi I thought that mordaunt short speakers were the only one worth having (untill I discovered that Epos were kind of related) and the performance range was always my dream speaker, although I still to this day haven't had the chance to hear a pair. I notice that they are actually an 'NBL' - the mid range driver and enclusure is 'nested' inside the main enclosure, a bit like Naim's NBLs

I think of mordaunt short as having a bit of a 'Naim sound', so I was wopndering does anyone here own a pair of these, and are they as good as I had always dreamed? I use ES14s at the moment, how would you think they would compare?

Phill,

I'm not aware of any MS products that use nested enclosures. I believe s Smilepeakers such as the MS 904 and 502 use a 10" driver mounted sideways in the speaker which has a sealed enclosure to reduce impact on the midrange units. This sealed enclosure is part of the main body of the loudspeaker. I believe the mid and treble units are mounted on the a plate on the front baffle.
The NBL has a pair of bass units in a housing which vents into the main body of the loudspeaker, but is decoupled from it. The mid and treble units are in a seperate mini speaker. This 'mini-speaker' sits on a suspension which decouples it from te main body of the loudspeaker and it is this that is what makes the NBL a 'nested' box loudspeaker.

I hope this makes sense, and I hope it is all correct.

Noel.

Sorry, I didn't mention the fact that I don't include the new, Richersoundisd mordaunt short - since they were bought buy Richersounds they seem to have lost the plot as far as I'm concerned.

Your right that there are no MS products now as I described, but before they went bust, they had a flagship range of speakers called the performance range (820, 860 and 880 models), which very much used a nested mid and tweeter arrangment, although the bass drivers were not decoupled from the main cabinet as it sounds like they are in the NBLs.
I can't find any reviews of them any more, but there's a dodgy little picture of a pair at this site if your not sure what speaker I'm on about: http://www.beamecho.mcmail.com/reccomme.htm
(no idea what the site is - just the result of a quick search)
