Zagat's Top Ten Most Popular Al***s

Posted by: Naimed-In-NY on 25 September 2003

Zagat, which is known for publishing surveys of hotels and restaurants in major cities, just published the results of its first music survey. According to that survey, the ten most popular albums of all time are:

1. "Born to Run" - Bruce Springsteen
2. "Abbey Road" - The Beatles
3. "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" - The Beatles
4. "The Joshua Tree" - U2
5. "The White Album" - The Beatles
6. "Kind of Blue" - Miles Davis
7. "Darkness on the Edge of Town" - Bruce Springsteen
8. "Revolver" - The Beatles
9. "Dark Side on the Moon" - Pink Floyd
10. "Achtung Baby" - U2

An article describing the survey said that more than 10,000 people participated, although I do not know if it was limited to the US or included other countries.

I have seven of the ten albums. Being a Bruce fanatic, I'm glad to see he is well represented, and it is tough to argue against giving the Beatles multiple slots. I'm sure all of us would have different "Top 10" lists, but I found this interesting and somewhat surprising.

It could have been much worse. It could have been better, too, but I'm mildly pleasantly surpised.

Thank god that what's-his-name Jackson guy with the white glove on one hand isn't on the list. Maybe time does heal all wounds (and wound all heels).

It appears to be a list of the most popular albums among middle-class, middle-aged, white men from Connecticut. Or Rhode Island.

The inclusion of "Achtung Baby" surprised me.

To avoid sounding like a total slacker, I admit to owning #4 and #6.

Strangely enough,

I don't have a single one of these in the top ten?

Nobody asked me for my views.

I wish they wouldn't keep calling it The White Album. It's 'The Beatles'.

Surely Sting must get more than 2 albums on that list?

Indeed. ALL his rotten records should be in the list, but those were the only two I could think of at the time. Any more and I'd start to crack up. Wibber wibber.

To (very loosely) paraphrase TS Eliot, "The human mind can only bear... so much Sting"
