NAIT 3 newbie questions

Posted by: domfjbrown on 20 May 2003

OK - so before we start, don't tell me I should have got a NAIT2 - too hard to find and too expensive...

Besides, I'm upgrading an Audiolab 8000A so a NAIT 3 will be infinitely superior musically Smile

First off, does the NAIT3 have an illuminated Naim logo?

Also, I get a small bit of hum from the toroidal transformer on the Audiolab on vinyl - if I rearrange the equipment on my rack so the amp is further down (a NAIT chucks out a lot less heat than an Audiolab) is this likely to help calm the problem? The hum is noticeable from around the 10.30 position on the Audiolab's volume control...

I'm just waiting for the MM boards and NACA5 to be ready - then I can test this beast out.

Any problem with using DIN->Phono adaptor plugs? I have 2 DIN leads for my tape/MD decks, and a Chord (green cable) stereo phono->DIN for CD - which leaves the tuner - if I use a DIN->Phono does it really screw up the sound?

This is for a bedroom system, so I'm keeping schtung about my "rack" (believe me - you don't want to know!). I'm using Rega Kyte speakers, a NAD533/Ortofon 530 turntable, NAD 4225 tuner, Philips DCC730 (well, it had to be done on Ebay!), a Sony MD-JA530 minidisc and, urm, urrgh, a Pioneer PDR609 CDP (which is NASTY - would using the cheapo Chord phono-phono lead/DIN adaptor on CD muffle it a bit over using the phono->DIN chord interconnect (anything to cut down on that fizzy CD treble!)?

I haven't actually applied power to the beast yet (why warm it up only to un-warm it when I take it into the shop to have the boards fitted?). I would do that myself, but I'm partially sighted so am liable to knacker something - plus I *am* paying full price for them - I might as well get my money's worth Cool I'm hoping the logo is illuminated OK though (how's it done - I mean, the "windows" for the letters are so thin - how did Naim get see-through plastic into the fasia like that - very impressed as I wandered if it was just a thick transfer!)?

Oh - and there's that NACA5 as well - I don't want to listen to the amp until I have the right cables - Cable Talk 3.1 is not too hot IMHO Smile I mean, it might cloud my judgement not having the thing set up properly...

BTW - what's *least* likely to be affected by a toroidal transformer - it looks as though the amp will have to be stacked on the lower shelf (at the top), on top of any two of the CD, MD, Tuner or DCC - I reckon, DCC, Tuner, Amp, then on the next shelf, MD, CD, then on the top shelf the turntable - would this work?

Any ideas if a Rega Ear will be "upset" by the toriodal tranny?

You mention your Pioneer PDR-609 as having a fizzy treble and thats exactly what I found when first switched on from cold. But if you leave it on all the time it smooths out quite a bit. I only use mine for recording and here it does a thoroughly respectable job but if something happened to my Micromega I could live with it. Like any piece of electronics it benefits from being left on all the time.

Syd - there's only one bummer with that - there's no display off button... It's in my bedroom system and that display is horrifically bright Frown Therefore the only way I can get round it is to turn the damn thing off when not in use Frown

My Rega Planet in the main rig is on 24/7 - even with the display on, that gorgeous magenta display isn't a problem Smile

Dom.

I remember when I was 'naimed' up in my bedroom. I would rest an open book off it to cover the logo!

Also you really should have asked around before paying full price for those MM boards Roll Eyes

Anyhoo, I think you gonna like it.

Yeah - I know about the phono boards, but me being a wuss I thought I'd get Audio-t to fit them - PLUS I then know they're the latest version - but yeah, I was bidding on a set on Ebay too but if it's more than half the cost of new ones...

The Naim logo shouldn't be too bad - it's the Pioneer's display that's waaaaaaay too bright - do those things burn out if left on saying "no disc" indefinitely - anyone know??

BTW - I have to resist - I want to wire it up with NACA5 and everything all in one go instead of jiggling around with the hifi too many times - the suspense is killing me though - think I'll ring Audio-t later Smile

Just a suggestion, but it might be a good idea to install with your existing speakers and cable in the first place. That way it reduces the number of variables and enables you to clearly define what each upgrade does. Once you know how the Nait sounds in your existing system, will be the time to consider upgrading the cable.

David - too late - it's wired in and sounding pretty good Smile

ON my main rig, I moved from Cable Talk 3.1 to NACA5, and remember that change well, so I figured with the NAIT I might as well wait for the correct cables before wiring it in Smile

Garyi - the Naim logo isn't too bad at night - the green colour is no worse than the display on my clock radio - if anything, the indicator lights on the buttons are worse!!
