Flash Malfunction

Posted by: chfs911 on 06 August 2003

I was doing AB demo with 2 LP 12s this evening one prefixed, the other through the phono input and adjusting the volume to match via my 8 month old Flash controller.

Suddenly the Volume increased to maximum and thing went VERY LOUD. 52/250 active through SBLs. Despite making it across the room in record time the 52 locked up and the Mute did not work. Swapping inputs was no good either!

One hand holding the volume down and the other the Flash I shouted for my wife. No reply! Couldn't hear for all the noise. I didn't want to break the 52 pot so was letting it go up a bit and turning it back. Tried frantically to eject the batteries in the Flash but didn't have a micro hex in my pocket that my 3 hand could reachRed Face)

By this point the neighbours had gathered across the street and the council van was drawing up to confiscate my gear(Naim that is). The dog had blood running out it's ears and my wife wanted a divorce. All in the space of 3mins!

My Question. Has anybody else experienced a similar problem? I would have though this is fairly serious in that volumes can exceed the 85 db mark faily quickly and may peak above the 100dB mark. I would like to recommend a fail safe power down buttion on the flash to prevent future accidents of this kind.

Oh the solution, I put the flash down and managed to lift the arm off the record. Flash still knackered and batteries ejected. Button appear ok not jammed down so it must be a short on the circuit board. H&S executive informed of damage to dog and marriage.

I have an early Flash and it has the same problem. Only solution is to pull the batteries and let it sit for a minute.

Consider yourself a long term beta tester.

You may be able to gain short-term reliefe by putting your finger (or anything opaque) in front of the remote receiver on the 52 (the black square under the Naim Audio logo).

That sounds like a bugger of a problem, though!

cheers, Martin

The Flash which came with my 552 has crashed twice now. It must still in Beta testing.

Hmmm.

This seems to support my prior suggestion that the Flash can make a very effective paper weight.

Next time it does it try stuffing the remote down your trousers to block the IR signal.

Suggest you hit the Power amp(s) Off next time, before stuffing anything down your trousers !

Damn thing did it again. I had just set up my new Nap500 so the poor SBls got a roasting! Didn't sound very good for quite a while after!

May just have needed to wait for the NAP 500 to warm up.

Anyway my guest got a fright as I put the Flash down my trousers ;O)

She left quite quickly after that for some reason?

Flash is back with Naim Service for investigation. Narcom has been pressed into service. Hope it's not the 52 front panel that's gone haywire as I may have to buy a 552;o)

Stop! The Flash is not malfunctioning. It is preprogrammed to play at full volume periodically without notice as part of the break-in of new equipment. Since Naim users are so concerned about the lengthy break-in of new gear, Naim HQ has taken over control of your system through its agent, Flash. Playing at full volume will speed up the process (and may lead to the purchase of more new gear - Flash automatically recognizes new gear when installed and will start the process again). Flash will adjust the volume, balance and inputs diirectly from HQ in Salisbury. You are no longer in control. Eek

Paul

PS Please note the Flash is not designed to be put down your pants no matter how entertaining that might be. It is NOT that type of device (although an attachment will be available shortly for such use - note Supercap required ).
