Cleaning CD's
Posted by: Davidmanne on 22 September 2003
About 10 years ago, I purchased the Mozart piano Sonatas played by Mitsuko Uchida. I used to play them daily. However, about 3 years ago we did a major renovation and the CD's were stored, then taken over by my children. They've gone away on holiday, so I repossessed them, only to find them quite filthy.
How are you meant to clean them?
Thanks, in anticipation

David,
I've heard of people successfully cleaning CDs with water and a dab of washing-up liquid, then rinsing with destilated water and drying with a "soft, lint-free cloth".

I use 'Crystal-Disc' from David Powell Distribution ltd, 182b Park Avenue, Park Royal, London, NW10 7KH. It's available from some record shops.
I find it makes even really bad discs playable again eg those borrowed from your local library. It has only failed me on one such disc and that had a really bad gouge in it. It cost about £3 for 20ml but you only need a tiny amount for each disc so it lasts for ages.

I clean mine in the bathroom using liquid hand soap.
Run a basin of clen lukewarm water dunk the cd in it squirt a dab of soap on your thumb work it from the centre out over the cd whilst also rotating it. Do several then run a bowl of clean lukewarm water repeat the thumb action this time to rinse the discsl Lay each disk on a clean fluffy towel, then gently blot them dry starting with the hole and outer edge where the water tends to collect.
Haven't found an easier or cheaper method [have tried Finyl and the Brady stuff].

Hi David
Disposable moistened spectacle wipes work for me.
Wipe in straight lines from centre to edge.
Good luck.

Thanks for all your advice.
In general, you've all suggested simple, low cost approaches that work.
I like that!!
