Talk Talk

I have just seen 33/1/3 put Talk Talk Sprit of Eden as his favourite album on the said thread; are these perhaps one of the most underated bands of recent times? I have all their albums, and each is fantatsic, but strangely they are not hailed in the same way as far less talented (and inconsistant) groups such as The Stone Roses etc.

I agree. Spirit of Eden is a fantastic album. The colour of Spring and Laughing Stock are must haves also. IMO the big creative jump came about when Tim Friese-Green got onboard with production duties. He seemed to provide the perfect foil to allow Hollis to realise his musical vision. Hollis has been very quit since they split but his solo album is essential for big talk talk lovers.

Absolutely agree!
Later Talk Talk (Spirit of Eden, Laughing Stock . .) are 'hidden gems'.
And Mark Hollis' solo album is a masterpiece
I can only conclude that the musics quiet understated style has kept it from wider acclaim.

worth a listen is 'O'Rang - Herd of Instinct
Paul Webb and Lee Harris ex of Talk Talk released it a couple of years after Talk Talk split up.

This whole thread is bringing a tear to my eye. When I bring up the subject of Talk Talk with others I either get, "Isn't that one of those skinny tie bands?" or "Who?"
I second everything that is said here.
And yes Dougunn, it is a masterpiece:

Spirit of Eden is IMO one of the best albums of the 80's. Likewise when I mention it, or the band,I am generally met with incomprehension!
What is the Marc Hollis solo record called? when was it released?
Yours, fellow Talk Talk fan, Chris M.
(I have just noticed the title on thirty three and a third's above album photo, I take it the Marc Hollis solo record is entitled Dougunn!

I haven't the slightest idea. It's as much a mystery as the man himself.

I am actually still a big fan of 'The Colour of Spring' this is still my favourite Talk Talk album. It successfully marries the commercial pop of their first two albums with the beauty and starkness of their following two. For me Laughing Stock is too deviod of tunes. Spirit of Eden is Superb but I think The Colour of Spring is even better.

I have all the Talk Talk stuff (on LP) and have just played their 1st LP - The Partys over. Made me smile, all those simmonds drums and synths took me right back to the early 80's

Dear all,
located the Mark Hollis solo record two days ago, initial impressions are that it is similar to even more minimalistic and understated Talk Talk (late period!),but its definately growing on me. The recording quality is exellent also, (always a bonus isn't it

john,
thanks for the link to Phill Brown and his recording technique,he certainly has an impressive C.V. of legendary recordings behind him as well;"Beggers Banquet","Electric Ladyland" et. al. The Marc Hollis recording has a wonderfully organic and natural analogue quality to it,no doubt enhanced by the antique valve technology employed in the recording process. I would love to get a recording on vinyl!,I have made inquiries, but it seems its C.D. only?

Talk Talk are (were) amazing - like you guys, apart from a few old friends, most people don't seem to know of them which is very sad.
As mentioned earlier, their production was superb too.
