Tivoli radios: let's talk about them

Posted by: ErikL on 01 November 2003

Hi,

I read the old threads but since there are surely new Tivoli owners here I thought I'd start a new discussion. I'm destined to buy myself a Model One or Model Three for the holidays. My concerns:

- Any luck using the 75-ohm jack with cable service? Or, am I better off using the ribbon antenna and getting 2 FM stations?

- Does anyone place their radio vertically (i.e., on its short side)? My space is limited.

- Has anyone found a particular inexpensive headphone to work well with Tivolis? I have very cheap Sony in-ear things that I use with my laptop, but I hate them.

Gushing comments on these little marvels welcome. Thanks.

Dan,

The FAQ's are here.

Reception is now excellent with my Model One- I looped the wire antenna and threw it behind the shelf, and every decent local station comes in with the amber light blazing! Its bass was a little much, but the more I distance it from vertical surfaces the more it cleans up.

PS- I won't be stuffing anything with socks. Wink

Algers,

Um, one question- what's the offical club handshake or salute?

That was a serious question about the clock radio. I looked on one site and it said it isn't an alarm, but I'm thinking of getting SWMBO one for Crimble (it won't be the only present before anybody starts with the saddo comments!).

Paul,

The Model Three does indeed have an alarm. You can wake to a buzzer or the radio. It also has a snooze function and something I really like- a 20 minute sleep timer. There's also a separate optional box, the Model Three Dual Alarm Speaker, that hosts a second alarm and a speaker (thus making the combo a dual-alarm clock Model Two, in effect).

I've wondered how the alarm clock Tivolis sound, as the speakers fire vertically.

More on features and functions here.

PS- Does anyone own a Tivoli PAL? They look perfect for camping, barbecues, drinking beer on the deck, power outages, etc.

Wow, just check out that website - those boxes are multiplying! I think their pushing the use of that form factor a little too far - sort of goes against the whole KISS appeal of the model one. However, at the risk of adding another box, wouldn't it be nice to replace the speaker on the 'one' with a big green LED for freq. (and also make the output stereo). Sort of a poor mans NAT02. Smile

cheers

Ross- Overpriced and sound okay compared to what alternatives? Just curious. (Only $99 here- I think you pay £99?)

Dan- I agree on the lots o' boxes point. I like the one-box Tivolis on their own.
