Napster may be dead but is file-sharing alive and well?

Posted by: Roy T on 07 November 2002

From the Guardian "Despite the death of Napster, file-sharing is not impossible. Just proceed with caution", advises Jack Schofield http://www.guardian.co.uk/internetnews/story/0,7369,834620,00.html I liked the advice about how to remove some of the hidden Scumware.

There was a great Doonesbury strip recently in which a DJ is interviewing 70s rocker Jimmy Thudpucker, who is enjoying a resurgence of popularity. Jimmy reports that he is currently the most downloaded musician on the net, with 65 million music files shared this month alone. The DJ asks if he is enjoying his new fame and Thudpucker replies no, he's too busy waiting tables at Red Lobster.

So true.

Being at uni, most people I know have access to stuff off Kazaa at ridiculous speeds. We can download a whole album in under a minute. Does that mean people buy fewer CDs? Well most people I know have ended up buying more, as they've ended up hearing more stuff they like. I don't think I know anyone who considers a copied CDR as a substitute.

A little off topic, but GDLive have many Phish downloads, including quite a few in Shorten format, for download, for free. I'm interested to know how that will fit in livephish's business model.

Power to them though. I'd like to get excellent quality recordings of their Halloween shows (they've done covers of The White Album, Remain In Light and Quadraphenia in successive Halloweens), plus that famous night in Arizona when they did all of Dark Side Of The Moon.

Cheers

Keith.
