dreamhouse...

bought this fred simon cd quite some time ago, but hadnt played it since my system wasnt really in a healthy state. my system is recovering nicely now, so i gave it a spin today.

on tracks 1 and 5 i hear an odd sound which comes up every now and then on one channel only. my best (and probably very misleading)description is that its rather like the sound of a plectrum going over rather loose and lifeless guitar strings.

anyone else heard this?? or are my ears distorting??

otherwise, great album, and very nice relaxing music.

enjoy...

Ken,

I'm so glad you're enjoying the music. Thanks for the kind words.

Could you please pin down one or two exact timings for the "odd sound," and on which channel, so that I can check it out? I haven't heard anything like what you describe in all the hundreds of times I've listened, but maybe I've missed it.

Also, do you hear it over speakers, with headphones, or both?

Thanks again for your comments.

fred, many thanks for response. its probably local (my daughter can clearly hear it too... she thinks its the double bass strings hitting the wood while vibrating... hmmm ... she should know, she plays the instrument). unfortunately i dont use headphones -- i figure if i like strawberry jam, i don't have to bathe in it...

for what its worth, here are the timings where the sound is most audible:

track 1: 0:35, 0:48-49, 2:26
track 5: 0:24, 0:31, 0:50, 1:00, 1:10-12

please dont lose sleep over this little curiosity of mine -- could be some local effect...

as i said, fabulous album -- and my daughter thinks so too... which is a great compliment from one who is into hip-hop and such like...

enjoy...

hi fred,

just played your cd on my daughters midi system and we can also hear the same effects. i suspect its intentional and part of the mix and i have simply caused confusion by not describing it accurately enough.

many thanks for responding. next time i am at my dealers, i will try their copy. so, not to worry.

enjoy...

Ken,

I'll have to check out those specific spots, but if your daughter plays acoustic bass and thinks the sound is the result of strings vibrating on the fretboard, she's probably right. Actually, this is a not-undesirable artifact, which translates to "extra character."

Glad you and your daughter are both enjoying the music.

Taken a while to get in to this, but now I feel I've got to know it, I really enjoy it - probably a bit like a good wine!!

Yes I think it is the bass strings hitting the wood, I've heard similar on Charlie Haden and Ted Sirota CDs.
