What amazing fact can you tell?

This is a great topic for the padded cell!!
With such a diversity of brains and life experiences, please post interesting facts you know that you don't think many others do.
I'll start:
"The word mesmerise came from Franz Mesmer who used to fool people in the 18th Century with a means of hypnosis."

Mean UK income for all people in full time employment is currently £30K.
Median salary is £20K

Yup, the skew of incomes is great indeed, Bob.
A 'money' programme of the past year cited £22K as the 50th centile (i.e. median) at that (pre-recession) time but, more shockingly, only twice this, £44K, as the 90th centile. That is, only 10% earned more than £44K at that time.
A few thus must earn loads to create the disparity between median and mean for the population overall. I am pleased to be in the 10% but, right-wing though I generally am, even I do wonder whether such a vast skew of incomes is 'fair'.

Frazer,
I also listened to something along those lines but via radio 4's
More Or Less where the Where Do You Fit In calculator from the
IFS (click for instructions) was used to show where we all fit in on the line from abject poverty to super rich. The fact that MPs earnings plus allowable extras placed them in the top five or so percentile caused a fair bit of muttering from both rulers and the ruled.

Having been founded in May 1859, the Melbourne Football Club is the oldest club still playing in an established championship in the world.
More amazingly, they created the rules of what would become AFL, AFTER they formed...

Is this weird football (ie Aussie rules) or real football(ie the one that you play with your feet)?
