Dear Erik!
I'll make you a list, but most of them are only italian spoken.
But if you like movies you'll be able to watch them the same.
Soon.

We have women.
Not in my area anyway.

Are you saying there are no women in the area where you live? No problem - move house!
I know you have said before you are not really interested in women - they are not as reliable as hi-fi and rarely play the tune you want and upgrading them is fraught with all kinds of problems but I would rather wake up with Bellucci than a DBL. And what about that other goddess I am so in love with.....? Heaven is Maria Grazia Cucinota dipped in chocolate! hmm yummy! (good job SWMBO can't read this)

Yes.
Sleeping with an SBL should be a very.........angular experience.
Anyway i do still think that the most part of italian women are flat brained.
They don't read, don't listen to music, don't like dogs, don't think, don't try to be critical and expect you act and live like a bloody soap opera actor.
I still do prefer my Naim system.
And dogs.

My favorite film is Leon by Luc Besson staring Jean Reno.
Gary Oldman is fantastic as the bad cop and Natalie Portman is amazing in this Nikitaesque role.
Great movie

Another vote for Tarkovsky's film Stalker (though Solaris is an all time favourite of mine).

Stalker is fantastic.
He uses shadows and light like no one.

I have seen many good so called 'high brow' movies, cult movies and all kinds of non-mainstream stuff as well as the usual fodder from Hollywood and I have watched a few Tarkvsky films and let them wash over me and work on a subliminal level and I watch them thinking hard about what is going on (I studied film for two years in college)and my carefully considered opinion is they are a load of tosh - the emperors new clothes is a story we could learn from. Some of the scenes are tedious beyond endurance. I have read many articles about his films by enthusiasts just in case I missed something but I didnt - I guess we just have a different understanding of what is really profound and what merely masquerades as profound. However each to their own, if his films enrich your life and bring meaning to you I am happy for you, his work is certainly better than muck like 'Reservoir dogs', 'Terminator' or 'Rambo'. I think many films are truly brilliant pieces of work but I have not necessarily included them in my list as the poll was about our favourite films which to me is quite another thing. You might think 'well he just doesn't get Tarkovsky' and maybe you are right but having read a good deal about his films I saw nothing that 'I didnt get'. I just don't think what he does is particularly clever, meaningful or entertaining. I guess meaning and beauty are certainly in the eye of the beholder.
Anyway, all the best, sorry if all this sounds very negative but it is not about you its about the films.

Wallace and Gromit.
And I like the few films i saw of Kubrick. Descriptions of his movies talk about them being black comedies, which strikes me as slightly odd. I see Full Metal Jacket and Dr Strangelove more as documentary dressed up as black comedy.
'Lord of the Rings' is a singular achievement. Imagine building a film industry from just about scratch and making a 10 hour movie completely in New Zealand. And not a sheep in sight!
Nice movie too.

Superman 2 of course.
Saw this when I was seven or eight. Still like to catch it whenever it's on tv.
'Kneel before Zod.'
Surely one of the best lines of dialogue of all time!
Regards,
Nicholas.

Dear Gianliugi,
I have a fair colection of DVDs, but the least sentimental and purest film I know is the 'Cruel Sea,' on the novel by N Monserat. Jack Hawkins leads the cast. It is incredibly sad. I think it is sadder than any tear jerking sentimental film I know. Amazingly, it has only one woman, the fantastically beautiful Virginia McKenna in it, and her end is less sad in the film than the book.
I love the film 'Diva,' and 'Il Postino' is something I enjoyed years ago. This is a splendid read.
All the best from Fredrik

Dear Fredrik!
Yes.
"Il postino" is a very nice movie.
It is a shame that the most part of good italian movies are hard to find with an english translation.
But i give my humble advise and suggest you movies like "Mediterraneo" and the old production of the director Gabriele Salvatores.
Another one that come to mind is "L'uomo dei sogni".
I must climb the bookshelf and pick some titles and then i'll post them.

Dear Gianluigi,
I'd rather the original language! Then if I am struggling have the subtitles!
Look out some nice French and italian films for me, which I will look out for over time. I can understand French and get Italian after a few goes! German, I struggle with! Norwegian I can follow. American English I find totally incomprehensible, because I think I understand it, but then realise that I don't!
I have a nice beer to follow, this evening, but work at 6 am on Sunday, so I cannot let my hair down!

'Pourquoi Israel'
A 195 minutes documentary made by Claude Lanzmann in 1972. It is not a graet movie, but I am in it, filmed during my military service at the time.

Gene Hackman and Terence Stamp’s ability to keep a straight face amid all that nonsense always impress me!
There are hundreds of films I always watch if I see them in the listings, so I'll just mention the most recent.
Blue Velvet; saw this for the first time last night...wow!

Did you see 'Diva' and 'Il Postino' were on my list of favourite films posted on this thread? I saw Wilemenia Fernandez Wiggens the singer in 'Diva' in concert and I was near enough to feal the air move around me and once she looked right into my eyes and all the hair stood up on the back of my neck. The sound she made went right through me and I swear my solar plexus resonated. What pop singer is capable of doing all that?
Hve you seen 'Cinema Paradiso' and 'Malena' Fredrik? Both have excellent scores.
Regards,
Erik
ps - glad Gould arrived safely.
