Target VR4 good ? (in between Kan's)

Hi guys,

On my way home this afternoon,I stopped at a local warehouse,to check out some new CD's.
On the topfloor they have the "HiFi"-store.
When I walked by I saw a Target VR4 equipment-support. As I looked at it for more then 10 seconds a salesman came my way. He measured the rack and actually I'm now thinking of buying it.
When the salesman saw me in doubt he suddenly even lowered the price with UKP 30,-!
(now it's only UKP 170,-)

It's 60 cm/24 inches high,with 4 MDF shelves.
(15cm/6 inches in between) Now,to me it looked better then my current Sound-Factory rack and also it will hide more cables.

Is there anyone who uses/used this (kinda) Target Rack with Naim stuff ?

Now, another thing that may keep me from buying it is: I would place my CDX on the top-shelf,with spikes underneath the rack, the total height would come to 74cm/30 inches, and it would stand in between/front of my Kan's.
Would this have a bad influence on the soundstage, since the Kan-II stands are only 55cm high ?
I know from a topic I posted a while ago that it's a bad thing to place a TT on this height level, but does the same principle go for a CD-player ?

Hi Alco,

I did noticed your comments about this stand in your 'alternatives for nac-a5' thread, but I decided not to comment there as I know nothing of the later Target stands, other than the fact that they went over to glass shelving from MDF.

But since then, a couple of things have come to mind...

1) Should you bother with all of those shelves unless you intend to fill them with gear? I noticed from your profile that your are strictly CDX into the Nait 2.

2) To me your system looks very neat and compact as it is. I wouldn't worry too much about the wires showing, as they always will, one way or another. Besides, you have two less wires now that you have gone over to the CDX! confused

3) As far as the taller stand affecting the sound field, I do agree that it is better to keep the clutter between the speakers to a minimum. Despite the shallow chimney(?) breast between your Kans, it all looks very open and symetrical, and a tall stand can only take away more of that open space. Besides, any unused shelves are likely to just resonate and colour the sound anyway. If your speakers were intended for free space positioning, it may not matter as much, but are there really any free standing speakers that can hold a kandle to Kans? wink

Hi Graig,

Thanx for ya reply.

You're right,I only have the CDX and my Nait-2.
It's just that with the Sound-Factory support the gap between the bottomshelf and the top-shelf is about 35cm/25 inches. This way the cablemess showes up easily and it's very hard to hide the nac-a6 behind it.
On the other hand, if I don't really need 4 shelfs
and the 2 shelves might resonate when music is played,I'll probably better stick to my current rqack or find another one of the same height.
(like an Apollo AD3 or Sound-Organisation,like Rob Holt and/or Andrew Randle have)

Greetings,
