Avalon Sunset as an intro is a sure thing. However the recent Astral Weeks live album is a fantastic way to spend an hour with the curmudgeon.

No question; Atral Weeks is the one. However, I am surprised no one has mentioned No Guru, No Method, No Teacher or Veedon Fleece. Superb. Then there is the fabulous live recording at Ronnie Scott's (May 1995) with Georgie Fame.
Though for someone new to VM I would have to recommend Moondance, so accessible and so,so good. If Into the Mystic does not move you then I don't know what to say. And I have to comment that Astral Weeks Live..released earlier this year was brilliant and in some respects equalled the original studio offering. It was a delight to hear the musicians jam out here and there. Well worth picking up. The only VM I have not liked, and I have them all, is the one with that country singer Linda someone. Just not my taste.

No multi tracking with Nick Drake. He was a unique and brilliant guitarist and not easily copied. Of course it helped that his fingers were strong and long, which is often the case with the very best as they can physically do things that others can't.

There are many, many outstanding Van the Man albums; has anyone mentioned "His Band and the Street Choir" or "Tupelo Honey"? "Saint Dominic's Preview"? But still, Astral Weeks and Moondance are the two essential albums, yet completely different (Moondance has many successors, while Astral Weeks is unique).
But the interesting thing is that Van performed "Astral Weeks Live at the Hollywood Bowl" last year, and the resulting live album is excellent. Available on LP!
Edit: I see that Sootycat mentioned this...
