I picked this up for 50p on vinyl (boxset) by the Weiner Philharmoniker "Gala Performance" on Decca. Does nayone know if this is any good?

Thanks

If this the recording conducted by Karajan, it is very good - if you like this opera in the first place of course. The 'gala' part refers to the 2nd act party scene, where Decca hired a huge roster of singers to sing music unusual for them, including broadway tunes and parts of opera arias. It's so cheesy it's good!

I've never heard it, but it's had good reviews from music critics over the last 50 years or so.

Try to hear Carlos Kleiber's wonderful recording on DG, if you can.

The price is right anyway. Why not listen to it?
