CD5/NAIT5 AND MORE?

Posted by: stevie d on 02 September 2003

Hi

After having some advice hammered into my head of late, I am in the process of ditching a Rotel amp combo and replacing them with the Nait 5. This inturn will work with my CD5 and B&W602S3 speakers.

What is the best avenue for me to take from here. Power amp for the Nait? (if so, which one?) FC2 for the CD5? Both? As you can see, there are so many options for me to take. I don't mind adding as I go, but I don't really have that much wedge to do it all in one go.

Thanks

Hi Stevie,

welcome to the forum.

I would start out by looking at a power supply for the CD5. This will have the biggest improvement on the sound.

Once you have done this, thats the time to be looking at the amplifier.

Is this the FC2?

I have seen write ups saying that this has to be used with the CD5 & a pre amp. Is this entirely true. Can it be used with just the CD5?

Thanks

Steve,

yes the FC2 can be used on the CD5 alone. You can also use a seperate FC2 with the amplifier which will provide a further improvement.

I beleive you can also use the more expensive and better sounding HI-cap with the CD5.

The Flatcap2 can be used to power both the CD5 and the pre-amp part of the Nait 5 (or indeed with a separate pre-amp such as the 112). But you can use it to power just one it's up to you.

I have a CD5, Nait 5 and FC2 and after experimentation decided I liked the sound best when the FC2 was powering both. But it's a matter of taste...

Thanks for the replies.

To be totally honest the FC2 is more than likely the option I would be taking. I was lead to believe that you had to run both the amp and cd player.

Has anybody compared the HC2 and the FC2 on a similar set up? Is there a massive difference between the two.

Thanks Julian

I suppose that if I find a very well prices Hicap (poss px, ex dem) then it may be worth paying a little more over the FC2.

In the long run would it be totally necessary to go along the Nait5 / Power amp route. Or is this realisticaly a long term plan?

Cheers

Steve,

its well worth paying the extra to find a good hi-cap.

With regards to the power amp it really depends where you want to end up?

A good amp would be a 72/140 which can be obtained at a reasonable price on the second hand market. This can also be up-graded with the addition of a hi-cap.

I have been looking at a picture of a hi-cap and it appears to be smaller than the FC2. Why is this and is it available in a larger size.

As much as it would be better than a FC2, the missus would have kittens over something that does not match and pretty much ruin any of the peaceful nights I currently enjoy! Razz

Steve,

simply the hi-cap was only ever made in that size box. The FC2 comes in the new series 5 size box.

It may be worth buying the FC2 purely to maintain domestic harmony!

Hi

I am thinking that (well I have talked myself round that way) that the FC2 will be the best bet. I believe this for the following reasons.

1) Her indoors is used to seing a pre amp and power amp. Albeit Silver. So I'm sure that I could mislead her slightly and tell her that it is the same.

2) I'm not too sure about hiding a HC ander my rack. There is an extension lead under there and I don't think there is enough room (height wise) for a HC as well.

Oh well, it seems the FC it is then... now to find a second hand one...!
