iTunes "ignoring" Audio CDs

Posted by: winkyincanada on 27 December 2009

I have iTunes on my Mini set to automatically rip CDs when inserted. But more often than not, iTunes fails to do this. I see what I think is the "import" screen flash briefly before disappearing again. iTunes doesn't now know there is a CD in the drive. Nor does Finder. I have to use Disk Utility to eject it. Funny thing is, when I then re-insert the disc it ALWAYS works the second time.

Any clues?

Dirty CDs. I have come across many of them.
By the way, a smal tip - the best way to eject a dirty or faulty CD if all other GUI-based methods fail is to run the following terminal command:

% drutil tray eject

This command line util works perfectly for me all the time.

If your mini is still in warranty, take it back the drives knackered.

Had the same problem. I bought a 2GHz, 320GB at a reduced price as the new model was out. After 900 CDs had been installed it started not reading the CDs. That is to say, the disc icon would appear, access Gracenote and then disappear. Took it in to the Apple Store and it worked perfectly on their monitor. Brought it home and it didn't work again (I restarted mine and it read the CD fine like yours). Videoed the problem and took it back again. Got a new spec machine for no extra money (£470 for a £650 machine!).

The only 'downside' was that I had to wait instore for 3 hours while 300Gb of music transferred between the machines.

Do as Garyi suggests, take it back.

CDs are all clean and in good condition. Taking it back might be the go. Thanks, guys.

I have seen some posts suggesting that this is an iTunes 9.0.2 bug. Have you simply tried mounting the CD using Disk Utility when it doesn't show up? This is faster and perhaps less irritating than ejecting or rebooting.

Just tried. It worked instantly. Thanks.

All I would say is that I don't have this issue and most people don't have this issue therefore I think its worth taking it in and having a word.

Yes, there seems something wrong, but since using disc utility to remount an audio CD, the problem seems much less frequent. I just know that should I take it to the store, the problem will refuse to appear in front of the "genius" Roll Eyes .

Winky

I looked a real 'plum' when I took mine in and it was perfect in operation! Video it on a camera. The store were really helpful when there saw the issue. Because mine was under 28 days old a got a new machine, not sure that will be the case for you but give it a shot.

Have you thought about trying in install iTunes 9.0.1 to see if the problem then continues?

Regards

I get this sometimes on both my Mini and iMac & it's the same symptoms. The discs are more often than not brand new; ripping them's the first thing I do.

As it's only occasionally I'm not too bothered really. Still, seems more likely to be software than the drives themselves?

Very occasionally this happens on my iMac. If it gets worse I'll worry then.
Usually just hitting the eject button works though.
It seems worse more recently so could be v 9.0.2.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. I am not especially bothered by it as it only matters for each new disc once (at the most) and I've now completed my back-catalogue rips.

I've been having this happen on my imac. I think you are correct BigH - been happening since 9.0.2

Nice to know it isn't isolated (that's a bit selfish, eh? Winker) . A fix in 9.0.3 perhaps. Not unknown...

Thanks seems to cover most of what we are experiencing.

Only one CD in my collection resolutely refused to be read by my Mac. It was spotless and played perfectly in any CD player. Copy protection? - though there was no reference to CP on the case.

I made a straight copy of it to a CD-R on my old PC, and that was happily accepted and ripped by the Mac into iTunes.

Any ideas?

John.

Never found one that wouldn't rip at all. The speeds vary like crazy between discs, though. I can't spot a pattern, but it might have something to do with copy protection.

I have been ripping CDs to my New iRiver B30 & the only one that wont Transfer to my player is "High" by The Blue Nile.
Another thing these Flac files must be big I have filled my 16G new player all ready ,my old player iRiver H320 20G still has another 15G to fill using MP3 files.
