Fraim - top or bottom sounds best?

Martin,

Top contenders for 'best' shelf would obviously be XPS or 52PS. I would make the suggestion that from your list of components you put the 52PS on the 'best' shelf (whichever that may be for Fraim). Reason being that the audio signal is looped through the 52PS connectors/chassis and therefore there may be more scope for benefit.

I guess that line of thinking is also true of your SNAXO Supercap and Stageline Hicap but the 52 is closer to the source (compared to the SNAXO) or benefits all sources (compared to the Stageline).

Martin,

There may be some other not-so-subtle interactions you'll want to take into account when placing those power supplies.

For example, in my right-hand (tranny) 3-shelf Fraim array (consisting of HC,CDPS,250-in order top shelf to bottom shelf), my Hicap was the chief offender (or offended? ;-) The rig sounded noticeably worse with the hicap on the middle shelf and with *either* the cdps or 250 located on shelves above or below. The degradation that occurred with any shelf assignment (which included the hicap on the middle or bottom shelf) was consistant--less tuneful, more distorted (or breakup on peak musical passages in other words) and remained (though less apparent) when the hicap was placed on the top shelf. Interestingly, when I first placed the HC on the top shelf, I positioned it flush with the glass front-edge and on the right-hand side of the glass (again this gave the best sound at this point), but....when I moved the hicap to a front-and-centered position with respect to its (glass)shelf (same top shelf assignment), further reductions in distortion and improved tunefulness took place--as much as varying the box/shelf assignments themselves. This leads me to believe there are still some electrical (as well as acoustical) anomalies involved. Though my scenario is a bit different from yours, it still parallels with a power supply (my Hicap) shelved above another power supply (my cdps)...and worse yet, the extra variable of the precise location of the hicap on its own shelf (positioning with respect to a power supply below or above).

...sorry to add another headache,

dave
